A coroner's jury ruled William McMahill, 72, of Waterloo died in an auto collision caused by Lee James who was intoxicated. James is bound over to the grand jury on a manslaughter charge and jailed on a 2500 bond.
Mrs. Kate Parrott sues Fort Dodge for 3000 alleging her home became unhealthful and uninhabitable due to emissions from the new municipal sewage disposal plant. The suit is among several similar actions by property owners against the city.
Harry K. Rea, 49, Humboldt native and former Dakota City school head, died after a bench on a cliff top at a Grand Marais hotel collapsed sending him about 20 feet to a ledge. He lived in Minneapolis recently. A son and daughter survive.
Des Moines welcomed Tom Herridge a 56 year old from Tarkio Missouri as a new unusual traveler. He has logged 39000 miles on his scooter touring at about 25 miles per hour and is en route from Canada to the New York world’s fair. He sleeps in a trailer that unfolds into a six foot bed.
In Waterloo area a bid to incorporate the Rain bow settlement west of Waterloo failed 63 to 37 after a heated campaign. Voters turnout was about 50 percent of the eligible votes cast in the district.
John H Stoner of Logan real estate man and orchardist was bound over by United States Commissioner Churchman in Omaha on a $5,000 bond as part of a federal grand jury indictment naming 62 defendants, including Stoner, in a scheme of insurance fraud tied to staged automobile wrecks.
The 18 month old daughter of Mr and Mrs Walter Hensehen on a farm near Klemm e drowned in a ten gallon water jar while playing in the yard. The accident was unseen and found when the mother searched for the child. The infant was taken to Clear Lake where a respirator failed to revive her.
Rudolph Badger Larson narrowly survived a sewer ditch collapse as colleagues Mervin Fevoldt and Robert Bradley helped free him. The cave-in buried Fevoldt to the neck and Bradley to the waist before all three escaped. The doctor said a minute longer would have suffocated Larson.
Mrs. Richard Turner, 22, of Aurora, was critically injured in an automobile accident. Two ambulance attendants used a two way radio to contact local police who alerted doctors, aiding her and her husband to reach medical care.
Polk County Sheriff Vane B Overturff says he will not act further on the Elks charity picnic gambling raid until he talks with County Attorney Frank Kable on vacation. He maintains the raid was ordered by state officials and that responsibility lies with the state, despite a letter from Atty Gen Fred Everett.
Officials of Southern Pacific probe a wreck of the streamliner City of San Francisco near Carlin Nevada. They say it shows clear signs of sabotage with murderous intent. The disaster killed about 20 and injured some 65 others. Photos show survivor S. Horace Diston and Bill Williams at the site where rails were found spread. Investigators report a 30 foot rail moved inward four inches and tie plates removed and re spiked.
Iowa forecasts indicate strong corn and soybean yields overall, with moisture shortages limiting only five counties Madison Warren Lucas and Wayne. Milk stage corn is near late maturity. Truck and canning crops and tomatoes show lower outputs versus 1938 while sweet corn and watermelon yields fall and total melons are projected at 578000.
John W. Graber, 73, died at his east Wayland home after a several month illness. Funeral services set for 1:45 p.m. at the home and 2:30 p.m. at Eicher church. Born Oct 27, 1865 in Blamont France, he came to the United States at age 12. Married Emma Richer on Dec 21, 1893. Survived by wife, three sons Lee Denver Earl at home Henry near Noble, one brother Michael Graber Heyburn Idaho, and four grandchildren.
A collision between a car driven by T. H. Peters of Washington and another driven by Lester Ingraham of Brighton occurred at the corner of East Washington Street and South Second Avenue last evening. Damages were about 50 dollars to the Peters car and 10 dollars to Ingraham’s vehicle.
The Dies committee in Washington called Fritz Kuhn, leader of the German American Bund, as the first witness in a new hearing on Fascist activities. Kuhn outlined the Bund structure with three divisions and about 47 districts, noting only Louisiana lacks members and that only Aryans may belong.
Des Moines reports the Iowa City state Hygienic Laboratory performed 12,488 syphilis tests on Wasserman specimens in July, a new monthly high. Among 1,449 prenatal labels there were 26 reactors, 16 positives and 10 doubtfuls, a 1.7 percent rate among expectant mothers. The lab processed 1,001 tests in one day.
The annual picnic of the first Bi Monthly Cow Testing association of Washington county is scheduled for tomorrow in Bunget park. Events begin at 10 am with a judging contest at Jog Lchantz farm, then a tour of the Hayes Golden Guernsey Dairy, followed by a noon basket picnic with coffee and ice cream. Afternoon races and contests feature prize announcements, with two high scorers eligible to represent the group at the state judging contest in Waterloo during the dairy cattle congress in September.

Robert White, 19, was arrested Monday in Alnaworth on forgery charges after passing a $25 check at the Pigely Fogly store. He pleaded guilty at a preliminary hearing before Justice V. Eldridge. Judge J Siegers of Newton sentenced him to three months in the county jail. The judge planned to leave for home after adjournment.
London reports both Old Moore’s Almanacks forecast a major international crisis in April 1940. Prophecies foresee April as a critical month with appeasement moves, Anglo American cooperation, and tensions across central Europe and the Balkans. Outlook for May and later months includes shifts in international power, armament talks, and colonial disputes.
Federal Works Administrator John M. Carmody ordered a 50 percent reduction in the Public Works Administration staff nationwide starting September 1. The move will discharge about 6,000 employees.

In the Washington school district about 625 kindergarten through sixth grade children will be split nearly evenly between the two elementary buildings. With Lincoln new building delayed until November, students will attend the old Lincoln and Wallace schools at the start. Kindergarten and grades one to three stay at the old Lincoln, while four to six go to Wallace until the south school is ready. An announcement will precede the opening day to clarify assignments.
