Edward Crispin, 23, jailed 30 days by Justice Howell for taking part with five others in destroying a large melon patch on the Howard Darland farm near Barnes City. The five juveniles were ordered to pay damages.
Chariton A R Metz about 55 died in the liquor store where he worked on his first day. Coroner C L Britell attributed death to heart failure. Metz was a recent state appointee.
Council Bluffs announces the appointment of John G. Nace as principal of the Iowa School for the Deaf, effective September 1. Nace has served at the Pennsylvania school for the deaf for seven years.
Benny Nelson of Dubuque with ten children faces charges for occupying a condemned house. He told Judge Louis Fautsch that affordable housing is unavailable to them, after which the judge gave him one week to find another home.
Decorah veteran Marvin T. Grattan 91, a Civil War veteran, saw the remainder of an eight year manslaughter term set aside for sentimental reasons. He and his wife planned to attend the Grand Army of the Republic encampment in Pittsburgh, which may be the last for the veterans.
Decatur county sheriff Roscoe Sinco deputy Frank Kendall James Caldwell Bernard Gilreath and D A Griffith plus Standard Oil Co named defendants in a 10000 damage suit filed in federal court by Lloyd KE Farrell of Kansas City Missouri. Farrell says he was arrested and jailed after buying one dollar worth of gasoline from Griffith and paying for it.
AMEs Dr Barton Morgan of Ames head of vocational education at Iowa State College was named chairman to draft a public school agriculture course. Joining him are Dr Winfield Scott and Dr T W Schultz, Prof A H Hausrath, R A Griffin and five Iowa public school superintendents, all appointed by Miss Jessie M Parker.
Washington County farmers owed the Federal Land Bank 2,332,500 on 499 loans at the start of the year, up from 2,099,800 on 455 loans in 1935. About a fifth of 21,924 loans in 1945 funded down payments for farm homes. Land bank loans bear 4 percent interest, while commissioner loans carry 5 percent.
Fritz Kuhn told the Dies committee he favors a united front of patriotic organizations including the Silver Shirts and Knights of the White Camelia. He denied plans to lead the united front and argued the term fascists is misapplied to these groups.
The Rev. I. Fredmund marks a quarter century in gospel ministry since his 25th anniversary of ordination at Calvary Baptist Cedar Falls Iowa. A reception is planned, with services in Cedar Falls and a Sunday return for a union service in Washington.
Washington enters the Iowa baby health contest at the state fair with Donna Mae Heck among the first of 700+ entries. Four hundred dollars in trophies and awards are planned for winners. The event runs August 25 to September 1 with 39 Iowa baby specialists evaluating each infant and offering parent consultations on scores.
At their regular meeting on August 21 the Knights of Columbus will host a reception for Rev. E. P. Seidel of East Pleasant Plain who has been transferred to Fort Madison.
Captain Jay Brown leads an advance detail of eight troopers from Troop F to Camp Dodge to prepare quarters for the main unit arriving next Sunday morning. The advance entrain Saturday night, Camp Dodge stay runs until Sept. 3, with Lieutenants Walter Conner and Max Donaldson in charge.

Father Seidel leaves his eight year post on the local council and moves to Fort Madison to replace a priest who died three weeks ago. District K officers and nearby council members are expected at the meeting.
Dean Harland Mead announces a new course titled Introduction to Education will be added this fall. It serves as a broad survey for students considering teaching as a profession and outlines aims such as understanding education’s structure, opportunities, philosophy, and methods.
The junior college education courses aim to serve prospective rural teachers. An Introduction To Education will be offered this term and followed next semester by Educational Psychology.
Senator Frederick Van Buys of Indiana says at least 15 Democratic senators will oppose a Roosevelt third term nomination from the 1940 Democratic National Convention. He links opposition to a two term tradition and says Democrats would struggle to stay in power if Roosevelt names a candidate he calls a political capon. He warns breaking the tradition would doom the country.
The treasury reported a deficit of 762,398,375 for the first six weeks of the 1940 fiscal year. Through August 16 spending totaled 1,337,271,876 versus 1,151,405,572 a year earlier.
Washington's centennial celebration serves as a model for many Iowa towns as Fred Downing of the Centennial commission reports inquiries from committees. Indianola and Fairfield pursued plans, Ames and Webster City sent delegations, and others sought ideas on displays, parades, cooperation, and decorations. Net receipts, aided by the Chamber of Commerce, exceed expenses by at least $1,000 and will go to the illuminated fountain fund toward a fountain costing about $4,000 with additions after it started.
Washington county youths aged ten to twenty and their parents are invited to a Monday August 21 meeting at 8 oclock in the G A R room at the court house. County agent J W Chandler will lead as the 4 H work for calf feeding is discussed and a calf purchase committee may be formed.
In Sioux City Iowa Laura Askew 62 set fire to her home wounded her brother Jim 69 and then killed herself as police and firemen surrounded the house Neighbors summoned firemen after the blaze began The woman faced firefighters shouting Get back I want it to burn Jim Askew was shot in the shoulder by his sister and was taken to a hospital Firemen attached hose to a hydrant and attacked the woman.
Martin Flenner 80 died yesterday at his son T A Flenner’s Washington home after a year long illness. Body to be sent to Kansas Illinois for burial with no Washington services. Survived by wife and son. 50th wedding anniversary this year. He was a long time Christian church elder. Burial arrangements by L A Jones Funeral Home. Born Coles County Illinois January 27 1859.
In Pratville Alabama a town of 2300 the business section was flooded and National Guardsmen patrolled Bridge Creek dam which groaned under flood pressure. The southern Alabama floods were general Evelyn Nebergall of Iowa City arrived to visit friends but her shooting left a damaged home and an unclear casualty toll.
Trains arrive early tomorrow over the Rock Island from Oskaloosa. Unloading starts at daybreak at Cavalry Field Polk Street. Parade leaves grounds at 7 30 p m and reaches the public square at 11. Route goes Polk Street to South Town Main Marion and grounds. Ticket offices open until 5 at Phillips and Hebner Drug Store with same prices as at grounds. Loading trains leave Rock Island shortly after midnight for Rock Island shows Saturday.
Don Radda of Washington county and son Jesse display a towering corn stalk that measures 23 feet 10 inches, eclipsing the prior world record of 18 feet 9 inches set by George Osborne in 1937. The stalk, with three ears, was weighed and officially documented by county engineer Bill Rawn and notary C V Crull amid a public spectacle.
