Harvey Marshall a Linerville grocer was shot in the leg when a .38 revolver in his pocket fired after he checked for rats in his yard. The incident left a 14 inch flesh wound with the weapon discharged at his home.
Wilbur Flansburgh, 47, of Climbing Hill, was jailed 30 days after confessing to beating his mother Florence Flansburgh of Hornick. He pleaded guilty to assault and battery and intoxication. Mrs. Flansburgh testified it was not the first time she had been beaten.
Newton resident Lynn A. Russell has been named business manager of Parsons College at Fairfield. Russell brings more than 20 years at the former First National Bank here, later served as field representative for the Reconstruction Finance Corp, and recently ran his own real estate business.
Judge Beardmore of Charles City presided in six counties last week in the twelfth judicial district due to the absence of Judge Kepler and illness of Judge Edwards. He held court at a different location each day, with Graven and others assisting in the busy schedule.
Rabbi Morris N. Kertzer is appointed to the University of Iowa School of Religion faculty to succeed Moses Jung who resigns after 10 years. He will begin duties in the fall after teaching at the University of Illinois and the University of Alabama.
Washington County participates in the Iowa Daily Press tall corn contest as Wm. F. Waltman of Brighton Route 1 shows a 15 feet 6 inch stalk. The plant outgrows a Chicago Tribune exhibit and draws wide attention in front of the Journal office.
Reno reports a statewide manhunt for four possible saboteurs after the City of San Francisco wreck killed 23. Transients were detained and released as investigators pursue clues. three more victims were identified in Elko as the death toll rose to 23 amid differing eyewitness reports.
At Tientsin a Japanese army sentry struck 69 year old American woman Mrs Francis Mary Richard after she failed to show a United States official card. Five sentries allowed her through with the American consulate card. a sixth refused and struck her when she produced the Japanese vice consul's personal card. The incident occurred at the Ashir road barrier as she attempted to enter the blockaded foreign concession with a basket of vegetables.
Gov George Wilson argued the state safety booth should be supplied free as highway patrolmen assist traffic during the Iowa state fair. The state executive council refused to pay 150 dollars for the booth and plans to negotiate with A R Corey, secretary of the state fair board.
Joe L. Long of the Iowa Taxpayers Association warns that counties face the largest local tax rise in 1949 due to a state law doubling poor fund levies to qualify for aid and a cattle disease control levy. Check of 83 county budgets shows total expenditures rising from 37.87 million in 1939 to 40.40 million in 1940, a 6.4 percent increase. city and town budgets rose 12.2 percent. School budgets show many increases, with 359 districts totaling about 15.98 million, up 5 percent from the prior year, while 229 districts overspent by 522,454 above appropriations.
Charles Gerot of Riverside died suddenly at his home at age 70 after returning from a walk. Born May 14 1869 he lived in Riverside most of his life and worked in a family meat market with his brother Henry before retiring five years ago. He is survived by his wife Rachel Krebs and a brother Fred Gerot of Buene Ore, plus nieces and nephews in the West.
In Dallas on August 15 the Texas Railroad Commission ordered an immediate halt to oil production across 87 000 wells. The move aimed to push crude prices up after a recent drop by refiners, with fields reporting compliance and field workers voicing anger at refiners.
Final plans for the Iowa American Legion state convention to open Aug 20 in Sioux City were to be completed on a Missouri river cruise by Monahan post members. The 500 legionnaires will use barges from James Construction for the river outing. The Aug 21 program will feature a night band concert, memorial services, and the Local 40 meeting with the good time society. State commander W F Sieverding will preside Aug 21 with Maj Gen M A Tinley as guest. Governors of Iowa Nebraska South Dakota and Minnesota invited to Tuesday program. Drum and bugle contest is Aug 22. National commander Stephen F Chadwick will address closing session Aug 23.
Robert White of Ainsworth aged 19 was arrested yesterday on forgery charges and bound over to district court by Justice W. S. Eldridge. He pleaded guilty at a preliminary hearing and will face Judge P. J. Siegers in Newton tomorrow. the forged check for 25 dollars, signed Charles A. Davis, was cashed at the Pigsty Wiggly store after clerk suspicions arose. Deputy Sheriff Stan Kiersey made the arrest.
Judge P J Siegers of Newton will arrive in Washington to hold a one day court for routine matters. The session will be held tomorrow with no special proceedings on the docket.
Mr and Mrs H W Messer spent Sunday in Kalona with the Donald Bennel family in a local social visit highlighting community ties.
Petit jurors for the September term of court in Washington county were drawn and their names announced by Clerk of Court R. R. Noonan, C. G. Anderson. The list includes residents from Washington, Crawfordsville, Wellman, Brighton, Keota, Kalona, Ainsworth, River side, West Chester, and Keota among others.
Harry E. Dougherty, previously assistant manager for five and a half months, assumes the Graham store manager role this week. He succeeds K E Binkert who left Saturday for Lakeview to run a clothing store. A new assistant manager is expected by September 1. Dougherty’s career includes prior work at the Graham Washing ton store and with J C Penney in Clarinda.
The Knoxville college quartet of colored singers presented an excellent program at the United Presbyterian church. Director Newell C. Fitzpatrick introduced the group and its members from Knoxville college. Notable solos included Mr. Fitzpatrick’s Ol Man River and pieces Strike Up the Band and The Gory Road, with musical readings and a Knoxville college talk by Paul A. Napier. The troupe tours by car and trailer, having spent three days at the San Francisco fair. Members are Curtis King Elijah Well Harry Fiele and Edward Cothren.
Washington junior college draws interest as the education department aims to train rural teachers. Seven students from last year are under contract to teach in county rural schools. Harry W Bowles will lead the department with nine years of teaching and a B.S. from Missouri State Teachers College and an M.A. from the University of Missouri. He is married with a young son.
Mount Pleasant Municipal band travels to Washington for a return trade concert with Washington band. The Mount Pleasant group, led by Chester Morgan, performs a varied program to close the Wednesday debt series of concerts.
Washington merchants join in a city wide sale with drastic price cuts. Chamber of Commerce promises a real old time Bargain Days and big crowds. Friday and Saturday feature widespread discounts as stores cooperate for the event.
DES MOINES August 15 UP Gov George A Wilson says he favors keeping the Thanksgiving date in Iowa as November 30 arguing the governor and president share authority to set the holiday date. He notes the tradition dates back about 75 years and will check the law before final stance.
Dr. F. Macon known as Frank resigns after thirteen years in the Journal circulation department. He will remain connected until Sept 1 and then pursue other plans. He has close ties across Washington county and will continue auction work and occasional office visits.
