Griswold reports Mayor J. S. Humphrey fined farmer Jack Rogers after an annual celebration incident. Rogers allegedly kicked the mayor in the shins when asked to move a parked car. Rogers paid 50 dollars fine and 17 dollars in court costs.
Billboards claim Seils Sterling four ring circus will visit Charles City on September 1 while others announce Ringling Brothers at Ellis airport the same day. Natives marvel at the town’s drawing power and bet one circus may alter its itinerary before September 1.
Cedar Rapids reports a woman fainted while walking along the riverbank and fell into the Cedar River. She was found unconscious in water about one and a half feet deep by Leslie Farmer and Al Stewart as they crossed Second Ave Bridge and was rescued.
Martin B. Mickelse of Antonio Colorado and Marion Leth from Aalborg Denmark faced refusals in six states as non residents and required tests. In Ohio and Illinois they were deemed ineligible or delayed. At Justice A M Stover's office they finally wed this week.
Erwin Ernst Steegmeller a 22 year old German born farm youth near Ogden plans to refuse conscription and resist a summons to join the Nazi army. He lives with his stepfather and mother Mr and Mrs John Miller ten miles north of town. Mrs Miller fled Germany fifteen years ago as a war widow with her son.
In Nevada area, a prairie fire threatening Bert Weltey’s farm four miles east was halted by wind shift. Cecil Meyer, son of Clarence and Mrs. Meyer, crawled through smoke to release a carload of steel and other stock from pens and barns. The blaze started from railroad grass fires fed by oil burners and strong winds. Nevada fire department battled for three hours.

J C Pryor of Burlington urged creation of an integrated state bar in Iowa to include all attorneys, enforce ethics, and curb unauthorized practice. He spoke at a Johnson County attorney gathering advocating self governance and disciplinary power.
American flyers begin search for missing Russian airmen believed to be down between the north pole and Fairbanks Alaska. The four motor plane captained by Sigismund Levanevsky could have run out of fuel after reaching 4000 miles from Moscow. Flares were set at the airport to guide survivors though fog delayed any signals.
George Wheelan, 65, retires as Burlington section foreman in Washington after a 51 year career begun with the Rock Island in 1886. He also worked for Milwaukee and spent 28 years with Burlington tracks here since 1913. His successor is L A Frey from Yarmouth Iowa.
Mrs. Jesse W. Shalla thanks twenty five volunteers for threshing grain at the Shalla estate. The list includes Clem Shalla, Joe Kern, Bill Shalla, Joe Te Bockhorst, Elmer Shalla, and many other local helpers.
Claire Gibson, a bank robber serving 40 years and awaiting murder trial at Garner, Iowa, committed suicide in the St. Paul county jail according to INS dispatches.
In a radio message from the aircraft Lights ound Levanevsky reported one motor failed over north pole regions. Officials blamed a breakdown in the duplicating system but said the flyers could continue on three engines without losing height. The outer starboard motor failed.

Des Moines reports four county seat towns lack state liquor stores Washington Mt Pleasant Bedford and Corydon. Iowa liquor control commission chair Br Manley says no stores will open there due to local sentiment. Ackley and Greene stores opened with managers named. David R. Munro 84, longtime West Chester area farmer, died suddenly yesterday from a heart attack. Funeral will be Sunday at 3 PM at the Munro farm home west of West Chester, conducted by Dr. J. B. Pollock, with interment in Keota cemetery. He was born October 13, 1852 in Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania. He married Mary A. Pierson in 1876 and lived on his farm since then until his death. Surviving are three children William S. Munro and two others.
Meredith Chance a longtime Journal employee from carrier to staff member will sever ties with the plant to seek broader experiences in California. He plans to depart Sunday morning and has spent most of his life in Washington as he looks to see more of the world.
Norman Baker of Muscatine, convicted of practicing medicine without a license, must serve one day in jail and pay a $50 fine per the Iowa Supreme Court ruling. If the fine is unpaid, he faces 16 additional days in jail.
John L Munro of West Chester, longtime township clerk and West Chester Telephone president, died leaving two sons Arch and John, a daughter Olive, five grandchildren, and a wide circle of relatives. He served in the Washington county Town legislature in 1912 and 1915, was a major cattle raiser, and operated a farm noted for feeding thousands of cattle for market. His relatives include Mrs Mary Eastman of Santa Ana and Mrs Jessie Brock of Omaha.

Our troop arrived at Camp Dodge after reporting a Madrid visit around 11:00 a.m. We traveled about seventeen miles from Ankeny with a routine day of work and rest.
