Funeral services for Nathan N. Ross of Missouri Valley, 63, who died suddenly at home, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Sherman-Eden Funeral Home with Rev. Hugh Milne officiating. Burial at Woodlawn cemetery. Born February 16, 1901 in Washington, he was a Linotype operator on the Washington Evening Journal and for 25 years with the Missouri Valley Times. A World War II veteran, he belonged to the Unit ed Presbyterian Church and the American Legion Post in Missouri Valley. He never married and is survived by his mother Mrs. Silas Ross of the UP Home in Washington, three brothers Harold of Wellman and Donald of Phoenix, Ariz., Kenneth of Rock Island, Ill., and sister Mrs. C. H. Woods of Davenport.

Six Iowa counties named emergency drought areas
Des Moines reports six more Iowa counties Allamakee Winneshiek Floyd Chickasaw Clayton and Fayette designated emergency drought areas by Agriculture Secretary Orville Freeman Governor Harold Hughes announced. Howard and Mitchell counties already had similar designations. Bremer County is under review for emergency drought status. The Soil Conservation office plans to ask to add six or seven townships in Cerro Gordo County. Drought designation allows haying and grazing on diverted lands and access to low cost federal loans.

Gunmen abduct Iowa lawmen in wild Laurens escape
A manhunt was under way in northwestern Iowa after two burglary suspects abducted three law enforcement officers at Laurens. The officers Don Hamilton Chester Vanderpool and Jack Fitzgerald were disarmed then released unharmed as the fugitives Tucker Tolley and Frank Collision, former Virginia residents, sped away in a sheriff's car after attempted arrests at two service station break ins Friday night.
