Linda Campbell writes from Kautokeino Norway thanking the community for enabling her summer with the Americans Abroad program. She describes midnight sun travel from Oslo to Rotterdam, notes Norwegian foods and Laplander culture, and recalls experiences with reindeer and cultural sights while urging others to appreciate the opportunity.
Reports from Ainsworth describe nightly drag races on Main Street with as many as 23 cars seen late at night and early morning. Residents say lack of a town marshal may have allowed more driving around while officials consider involving state or county authorities to stop the activity.
Eighty two members of the local Army Reserve unit under Capt Edsall D Brown of Washington will leave Sunday morning for a two week summer camp at Camp McCoy Wisconsin. The unit will travel by caravan of trucks and jeeps at 4 am and by bus three hours later returning home Saturday afternoon Sept 1. The list includes officers and enlisted personnel from Washington Sigourney Columbus Junction Keota Kalona Wellman and other areas.
Orientation for all seventh graders and new eighth graders in the Washinton Community School district will be held August 24 at 10 a.m. in the new Washington Junior High School building. Principal Jesse Linch opens with a welcome and teacher introductions. Superintendent John V. Phieger discusses the new building while David Lynch, guidance counselor, speaks on guidance. Mrs. Robert Everetts explains library use. Music follows before tours led by eighth grade student council members.
In Des Moines the suit seeking Iowa legislative reapportionment as unconstitutional draws mixed local reactions. Republican Keith Vetter and Democrat John Elliott defend or critique the Shaft Plan while county chairs Bob Everetts and Harry Levy weigh authority, representation, and court action.
Harry Levy of Washington has been named acting postmaster by the Post Office Department. The appointment takes effect once Oral J. Brown retires on August 31. Levy runs Mose Levy Co. on North Iowa Avenue and has long been active in Democratic Party circles, serving as Washington County Democratic Central Committee chair.
Eleven year old Dianne McFadden of Washington remains in serious condition with internal injuries at University Hospitals Iowa City. Her eight year old brother Robert was killed when they were struck by a car on South Marion Avenue Monday. Funeral arrangements for Robert McFadden are not yet set. Jones Funeral Home will handle arrangements when timing is decided.
William Eichelberger 69 died suddenly of a heart attack at his Wayland home shortly after dinner Tuesday. Funeral services are set for Friday at 10 am at Sugar Creek Church with burial in Sugar Creek Cemetery. Zehr Funeral Home in charge. He was born September 1, 1892 in Gridley Illinois. Surviving are his widow Katie Graber and children Alic Eichelberger Wyse Swartzen Calvin Alice Martin Orrin Leon Horst and one sister Marie Ingersol plus 18 grandchildren.
Vernon Feuerhelm the vocal music instructor at Washington High School announced tryouts for the student choir. Seniors audition Thursday juniors Friday and sophomores Monday next week with reporting times 9 to 12 and 1 to 4 p.m. First time enrollees may try out August 21 or 22.
In a two car accident near Oakdale, Jack W. Klemme of Iowa City died after pulling onto highway 218 from Oakdale road and being struck by a Miller vehicle. Joe Wagenknecht and Roy Miller, both of Ainsworth, were involved. Wagenknecht is in serious condition with a skull fracture and facial lacerations at University Hospital Iowa City, Miller was treated and released.
Theresa Eglin aged 99 Kalona's oldest resident died Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Hospital Iowa City after a stay since July 7 She lived on a Richmond farm 68 years before relocating to Kalona in 1961 She is survived by three sons Edward Charles Elmer and Geraldine and Margaret Yousley a funeral service is set at Peterseim Funeral Home and Holy Trinity Church in Richmond with burial in Richmond cemetery
Maj. Andrian Nikolayev and Lt. Col. Pavel Popovich landed south of Karaganda in Kazakhstan after a joint dual flight that covered about 2.86 million miles. Tass said both were in good shape and their ships functioned flawlessly as they fulfilled the mission objectives.
A highwaymen gang hijacked a U S mail truck near Plymouth Massachusetts carrying about 1.5 million dollars. The haul is the nation’s largest cash holdup, surpassing the Brink’s Boston robbery of 1950. Four to seven men, one dressed as a policeman, used shotguns or submachine guns in the staged heist.
Carl son Construction Co of Decorah completed a 20 foot Portland concrete pave ment on the southern Riverside Washington road in days aided by perfect weather. The north end remains in future plans by the Washington County board of supervisors. paving ends at the Northrup King building near the city limits. Officials may surface 12th Avenue in a future program. The project was delayed this year due to time needed for an assessment program and reluctance to use general funds.
