High Placings In All Iowa Fair Livestock Judging
Washington County winners highlighted the All Iowa Fair in Cedar Rapids with a Jennings family sweep in the on hoof park contest. Clarence Jennings of Ainsworth won a first in light weight hogs and was named reserve champion, while son Melvin of Winfield earned second in light weight hogs and Jennings’ son-in-law Bob Greene of Ainsworth took third in heavy weight hogs and third in light weight hogs. Mike Hein of Mechanicsville showed the champion hog. J H Jones of Ainsworth produced the Tamworth champion in the pig congress. John Dyle Yoder and family of Kalona led the dairy cattle with reserve junior Guernsey Keifer. The fair features all six Iowa dairy breed associations competing as judging continues through next week.

Grain Truck Damaged As Rural Bridge Collapses
A grain truck from Hotle Feed and Grain of Washington was badly damaged when a small rural bridge northeast of Washington collapsed. The truck carried about 450 bushels of shelled corn and fell through the bridge. Driver Lowell Carroll escaped with no serious injuries.

Driver of Stolen Car Narrowly Escapes On Hazardous Spin
A young driver, who had never handled a car, stole a vehicle from Mrs Myrtle Thoma in Ainsworth. On Highway 92 the car left the road, traveled about 60 rods on the shoulder, crossed the highway, hit a culvert end, and stopped in a corn field gateway. Estimated damage 400 to 500 dollars. Authorities also investigated damage to Albert Dusek’s parked car.

Collision Northeast of Town Injures Six
Six people were injured in a two car head on collision on a rural road northeast of Washington Monday evening. One victim was sent to University Hospital in Iowa City, none in serious condition. Tragedy Hits Washington Family In Local Car Crash
Eight year old Robert Lewis McFadden was killed and his sister Dianne McFadden was seriously injured when a northbound car driven by Norman Schoonover struck them and their cold drink stand on South Marion Avenue. A third child Sherry Miller narrowly escaped. The collision occurred as Baldrige’s vehicle pulled from a curb and Schoonover’s foot slipped from brake to accelerator. Police noted the driver was unfamiliar with the car and no charges will be filed. Robert died about 45 minutes after the crash, Dianne remained in serious condition.
