A photo pair contrasts Iowa Southern Utilities Co at North Second and East Third. Workmen begin dismantling the 175 foot smoke chimney once used by the company with an inside scaffold reaching the top and an outside scaffold raised near the summit. The right photo was taken Thursday.
A violent electrical storm dumped heavy rainfall and caused two farm fires in the county. At the Lake Weber farm near Brighton a machine shed and most machinery burned. insurance covered the building and contents except a spreader and mowing machine. At the William H. Edgar farm near Crawfordsville a 50 by 46 foot burn destroyed 1,500 bales of hay, with firemen saving nearby structures and no livestock lost.
Cedar Rapids police ruled the deaths of 37 year old Alvin Wilkinson and 30 year old widow Etta Young as murder and death by own action. Young was found shot twice in bed by her son David 13 while Wilkinson lay beside her after shooting himself through the heart. Wilkinson as married father of two and had been seeing Young for some time. Young's husband died in a train accident about four years ago.
Auto manufacturers urged Washington to secure additional steel to raise output over the next six months. Defense planners warned of possible critical shortages while industry officials disputed the impact of the one day steel strike.
The University of Iowa all girl bagpipe band said farewell in Aberdeen Scotland after a civic luncheon. Tears flowed as 65 members including drum major Mary Jon Mortenson sang and joined in Auld Lang Syne. The band next travels to Inverness amid praise from local officials.
Paul Woodrow Ferns appeared before Judge J G Patterson and entered a guilty plea for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. He received a 3500 fine plus costs and a recommended suspension of driving and liquor permits. Ferns resides at East Moline.
Washington county 4-H boys judging team will workout at the All Iowa fair in Cedar Rapids on Saturday as preparation for the state fair on August 26. Five boys are named Bob Cave Howard Bohr Harold Bohr Richard Ross and Orval Farrier. Four will make the state fair team.
Tom Robb, county extension director, outlines drought effects in the Missouri Ozarks. Pastures are short but conditions improved after a two week drought break. Buyers ship hay into the region. cattle remain in farms as feed remains tight.
Dr. R. W. Thompson of United Presbyterian home will lead the Sunday evening union park service with the topic Shall Christ Be Crucified Again. Tom Gray sings and directs, Margarette McCleery plays, Dr. C. R. Reed assists. If rain, service moves to the Baptist church.
At the Louisa county fair livestock auction in Columbus Junction on Thursday the grand champion Hereford baby beef brought 50 per hundredweight. Neil Padgett of Letts owned the animal, bought by Clyde Turkington of Letts. The second prize Angus sold for 44 per cwt to Smylie, Larmer and Battenhagen. The sale averaged 33.94 per cwt and totaled over 530000 with packing house representatives and local bidders.
In Washington on Thursday over 1 200 residents voted on two Iowa Southern Utilities franchise requests for 25 years each to sell electricity and natural gas. Electricity franchise approval reached about 80 percent with 953 yes, 280 no, and 25 spoiled ballots out of 1 256. Gas franchise tally showed 955 yes, 277 no, and 20 spoiled ballots out of 1 252.
Two Washington county 4 H demonstratio n teams were selected Thursday night at the Farm Bureau building to represent the county at the state fair in Des Moines. The Franklin Cubs team of Charles Phelps and Franklin Chmelar earned a blue ribbon for correct sitting and carrying. Frank Kleese leads the club while Jim Wagenknecht and Pat Tobin of the Ainsworth Beavers won second for their tractor air cleaner demonstration. An Ainsworth junior team, John and Bob Wagenknecht, demonstrated making an automatic hog waterer from an old pressure tank. Phil Baird, Mt. Pleasant extension director, judged the contest.
Three men and a woman died in a collision between a car and a grain truck four miles south of Sergeant Bluff on Highway 75. De Wolf George 20 a sailor on leave Wilson Robert 21 and Hughes Phillips Violet 24 both Sioux City residents killed. The truck driver Estelle Earl Newman Route 38 Akron said a fourth person in the car appeared injured but left with a passing motorist. Authorities searched for the missing man in hospitals offices and among acquaintances.
North Korea’s Gen Nam Il told Maj Gen Harrison in a letter that one new prisoner of war camp has been established, two others expanded, and two more moved. The note was delivered at a liaison briefing as truce talks pause until August 16 to resume POW exchanges.
Gov Adlai E Stevenson is likely to make two campaign swings in California this fall. The trips would begin in the second week of September with stops in San Francisco and then Los Angeles, potentially reaching San Diego if possible. The plan was outlined by California Democratic National Committeeman John Anson Ford after discussions with Stevenson and campaign manager Wilson Wyatt.
President Truman told about 200 CIO PAC delegates that the 1952 Democratic Platform is liberal and forward-looking and not a scrap of paper. He thanked union leaders for backing the ticket and praised Adlai Stevenson as an honorable, progressive nominee, with Philip Murray hailing Truman as labor’s greatest friend.
Marie Tener, director of nursing at State University of Iowa hospitals, will visit Washington on Tuesday August 19 to interview and hire nurses aides for University hospitals. She will meet applicants from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the county health office 202 KE Main St. Requirements include ages 18 to 50, good health, high school education preferred, and a three week training program after hiring.
Storbeck, 27, of Watertown Wisconsin, refused to plead to kidnapping charges in the abduction of Sabula mayor George Ulmer 70. His arraignment was continued indefinitely as Justice of the Peace Clifford Miller ordered he be returned to jail after the plea refusal. The mayor said Storbeck seized him with a knife during a wild ride last Thursday.
The YMCA lobby opens 15 minutes before game time to allow spectators to watch the all star football game on television.
Iowa and Wisconsin National Guard units, including the 113th Anti Aircraft Artillery Battalion, train near Lake Michigan at Camp Haven Wisconsin in rough conditions but high morale. Leadership from Maj. Gen. Fountain and Brig. Gen. Tandy commended the camp after inspecting firing drills, airfield defense work, and an after hours athletic program.
United States pledges support for elimination of all weapons of mass destruction including atomic chemical and biological arms. It says it will not promise not to use certain weapons until safeguards are in place and urges the Soviet Union to accept a Western plan for a verified arms census.
Eisenhower campaign aides mocked the Washington confusion over top secret world affairs reports he was not told about. They viewed the flap as a Democratic defensive moment and planned to press advantages as Eisenhower heads to Boise Idaho and Kansas City Kansas for Western governors and Republican candidates events.

Funeral services for Mrs. George Prosser were conducted at 2 p m Thursday at Jones funeral home with Rev Walter Smith officiating. Pallbearers included Oscar Burham William McGinnis George Murphy William Wulf John Skubal and David McCartney. She was buried in Ainsworth Cemetery.
Artemas Brown, YMCA secretary, is anxious to recover a large ring of keys lost recently. He emphasizes the keys are needed at the YMCA for operations and security.
U S Marines repel two Chinese assaults on Bunker Hill in a driving rain. About 2 100 Chinese casualties reported since the battle began, with 271 dead and 1 183 wounded. American fire prevents removal of corpses.
A Fontanelle farmer Bernard Lahey and a second man John Underwood faced lightning injuries as storms moved across southern Iowa. Lahey, 31, was killed while mowing near Fontanelle. Underwood, 26, recovered after being struck at a drive in Ottumwa. The same system burned a barn killing cattle and costing about 3000 dollars. Rain totals exceeded three inches across Burlington and Winterset areas.
Democratic National Chairman Stephen A. Mitchell said he will discuss with Gov. Adlai E. Stevenson the possibility of challenging Dwight D. Eisenhower to a television debate on presidential campaign issues. He called a TV face-to-face argument very interesting.
First Methodist church resumes services this Sunday with Sunday school at nine and morning worship at ten. The high school MYF meets at five thirty. Service hours remain unchanged until September 7.
