The West Branch loading station began operations Monday for this year’s tomato crop. Sixteen rowers, harvesting about 300 acres, will ship from the site. Hail and drought hurt the crop, but late rains largely recovered losses. Tomatoes are large, with good color, firmness, and flavor.
Some 450 Keokuk county farmers will receive corn-hov checks today and tomorrow. Word from Sigourney indicates the payments were received on Monday and total about $50,000.
The first applications for loans under the federal housing act were received by banks and loan associations as the home reconditioning program began in Iowa. About 30 loan associations within 104 Iowa affiliations with the Federal Home Loan Bank await applications to lend money, with Cedar Rapids president Frank Welch stressing the initiative now rests with homeowners.
Vern Clark spent twenty minutes in the Cornell Bluffs jail Monday after lighting a cigarette in the municipal court of Judge Planchard. The judge cited him for contempt of court.

County Supt Lester Bo Kra says tickets are ready for Washington county rural school pupils to join the Iowa State Fair state rural school chorus on August 26. He seeks names of participants and expects at least a dozen from the county. pupils must apply to the county superintendent promptly to obtain credentials.

Spirit Lake Iowa August 15 Raymond Herbert a 24 year old Iowa City resident was flown to an Iowa City hospital after a water wheel dive at West Okoboji left him with a broken neck and serious injuries. Authorities described his condition as serious and said he was airlifted for treatment.

At Ft Madison Iowa Lenker and Moore sentenced to three years for conspiracy to block cattle test enforcement during the Cedar county cow war are likely to be paroled tonight. Parole decision reportedly by the state board of parole places them under release to L M Peet an Iowa Farmers Union official. They resisted testers in 1931 prompting National Guard involvement and a 1932 Anamosa conviction.
Maurice Cahill Cedar Rapids attorney and former state commander of the American Legion died in an auto crash fifteen miles west of Cedar Rapids. A woman client riding with him was also killed.
Washington county receives 21 800 pounds of blue grass seed from Kentucky surplus for public planting along road shoulders school yards parks and other public places none for private use.
