Iowa observers prepare for the Perseid meteor shower with a midnight to morning peak. At Washington Country Club the Boy Scouts reported a rapid display with many meteors seen in under half an hour of viewing.
Buyers from drought stricken southwest states purchase large quantities of Iowa corn this week and ship by train and truck to Missouri Kansas Nebraska Oklahoma and Texas. Much corn comes from sealed stocks in northern Iowa while southern farmers hold back. Iowa anticipates no shortage with a 60 percent normal crop and old Iowa has more corn than it can use.
Leases signed today bring state liquor stores to Ida Grove New Hampton Charles City and Waverly. The Newton store is slated to open next week with expected operations expanding statewide presence.

Reporting from San Francisco the name of Baby Face Nelson, linked to Dillinger's gang, is tagged as the nation’s public enemy. He reportedly travels toward the West in a 12 cylinder tan car after holding up a Salt Lake gas station. A woman accompanied him as a revolver was used and phones were cut. Nelson faces multiple murders including the federal agent death during the Dillinger escape. A separate St Louis incident saw two prisoners freed in a dramatic hospital ward breakout. Perkins and Mills, both wanted suspects, fled with two liberators after a mobile chase and an auto wreck that left a companion dead and Mills wounded.
Chicago opened at a top of 5.90 for hogs the highest since 1921 with yesterday at 5.60. Iowa prices rose to 5.59 per hundredweight as USDA quotes reflect gains in the national market.
