Five‑foot boa Brutus owned by Mr. and Mrs. William Berdelman roamed free until Thursday when it tangled in a washing machine. The drive belt triggered a circuit breaker and repairman John Cook, aided by Deputy Allan Woda, freed the snake. Brutus suffered only minor scrapes.
Tim Cochran of the Keola FFA Chapter won the champion carcass in the 4 H and FFA swine show with a 284 pound crossbred barrow. Orlin Reschly won the Pig Derby Class for adult exhibitors. The top 10 indexing pigs earned $5 each from the Washington County Pork Producers Association.
In a case described by prosecutors as the largest drug network uncovered, 19 men and 3 women face trial in Manhattan federal court on charges of running a $200 million heroin and cocaine operation. Police say Michael A. Cook County circuit court Judge Joseph Wosik denied Cicero's bid to halt a Sunday rock festival at Hawthorne Race Track. He announced he would attend the concert featuring Yes, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Peter Frampton and Gary Wright, with an expected crowd of about 60,000. The town contended the event jeopardizes residents’ safety and morals. He cited constitutional rights and duty to protect youth access to music.
