UPI reports GOP Senate candidate Dave Stanley urged stronger moves to reform Congress and urged unity behind President Ford. He pressed open committee meetings elimination of seniority and financial disclosures for all members along with a five day work week and a future committee.
President Ford may choose his vice president this weekend as conservatives push George Bush and moderates back Nelson Rockefeller. Envelopes with recommendations were due today from Congress leaders and Ford plans to review with a small group, with confirmation scrutiny to follow.
The Day Care Center part of Head Start in Washington will close on Friday August 16. Located at 1202 East Washington Street the center served three to six year olds from low income working families. Low enrollment and a wage increase for the new fiscal year prompted the Southeast Iowa Head Start Multi Council to phase out this program. Staff will finish in August cleaning and painting the building before returning it to Immanuel Lutheran Church.
The Ford administration seeks to recreate the Cost of Living Council as a wage and price monitor with no enforcement power. Budget chief Ash and economist Rush insist on no tax changes and no return to broad controls, while GM price hikes prompt presidential scrutiny and White House talks with labor leader Meany.

The department will operate only from 10 a.m. on Wednesdays to meet overtime limits and budget constraints, with renewals 10 a.m. to 4 15 p.m. driving tests 10 11 30 a.m. and 1 to 3 45 p.m. written tests 10 a.m. to 3 45 p.m. motorcycle tests 2 p.m.
Lt. Gov. Lester Maddox led the Democratic primary with a strong plurality but failed to reach 50.1 percent, triggering a Sept. 3 runoff against George Busbee and Bert Lance. In the Republican field, Macon Mayor Ronnie Thompson led a four-man race toward a likely runoff with Harold Dye. Herman Talmadge won renomination to a fourth term.
The Iowa Commerce Commission revoked the Brains Feed and Grain Co. of Conesville license after an investigation found insufficient grain to cover warehouse obligations. Staff alleged missing or incomplete records of deposits and purchases.
