The Washington County campaign for a $700,000 Area Community Center reports $92,000 still needed by Sept 6 to secure the building at the County Fair grounds. Since last week, pledges totaled multiple amounts including $500,000 major pledge contingent on raising $200,000 more, with $108,000 pledged toward that. Harold Mangold urges county residents to back the project as a central meeting place for conventions and groups across the area.

Watermelon Seed Spitting Contest Draws 69 at Marr Park
The second annual Washington FFA watermelon seed event was held Saturday evening at Marr Park with 69 in attendance. Participants enjoyed games of horseshoes and volleyball while the watermelon was served. Larry Bohlen Jr. won the student division with a 21 ft 5 in spit and Pete Bell won the adult division with a 20 ft spit. Rain stayed away for the duration.

James Dale Eden, 14, of Bonaparte died when the motorcycle he rode apparently struck a deer on a Van Buren County road six miles northeast of Bonaparte. Eden’s body was found around midnight by friends. authorities said he had been dead about two hours. The deer carcass lay at the scene.

Tornado hits Ryan Iowa destroys church and damages town
A tornado that struck the eastern Iowa community of Ryan damaged about 25 homes, destroyed St. Patrick’s Church, and leveled the Great Plains Lumber Co.
