National Commercial Swine Conference Plans Under Way
Final plans for the Second Annual National Commercial Swine Type Conference in Washington run September 20 and 21 at the Washington County Fairgrounds. The event adds a production boar sale and crossbred gilt classes with entries open until September 15, featuring Duroc, Hampshire, Yorkshire and Chester White boars born Feb or Mar 1974. A barbecue, a swine judging contest, and expanded exhibits accompany the conference with prizes and sale orders set by the judge. Marian Owens coordinates entries and brochures.

An August 17 opening at the Washington Public Library features a black and white photography exhibit with over 40 works by Donna Proudfit and Hal Lipper. Proudfit, ISU graduate, produced pieces in 1973–74, while Lipper, ISU journalism senior, shot photos from 1967–1973. The gallery display runs one week.

July good month at county hospital
Washington County Hospital showed a positive July with both the acute hospital and the long term care unit in the black and helping reduce the year’s deficit. The July report notes a net of 4815 at the acute hospital and 1033 in long term care, with an average of 30.5 patients daily, 151 admissions, and 23 births. The board approved classroom space for a Health Occupations program sponsored by Kirkwood Community College and a nurses aide class held Aug 5 through Aug 9. Also approved the purchase of two Goméo aspirators for hospital use.
