Riots Ended as National Guardsmen Restore Los Angeles
National Guardsmen and police, armed and in combat gear, ended a three day riot in southeast Los Angeles. The unrest left at least 14 dead, hundreds injured and property losses estimated up to 100 million dollars. Thousands arrested as looters and arsonists attacked blocks in Watts and surrounding areas.

Des Moines woman stabbed in home invasion
A Des Moines woman, Velma Dignman, was stabbed in the chest and shoulder Friday by an unknown intruder who entered her bedroom. A roomer, William Graeve, reported seeing the assailant flee as Polk County Deputy Sheriff Roger Stevens pursued, firing a warning shot. the suspect vanished. Authorities found masking tape and a plastic cord nearby, and an abandoned car with headlights on was located near the scene.

All-Iowa Fair Opens with Angus Winners in Cedar Rapids
Hawkeye Acres of Crawfordsville and Harwood Farms of Sigourney showed the grand champion Angus bull and open beef champion at the All-Iowa Fair in Cedar Rapids. Four Corners Cafe Damaged by Morning Fire Near Ainsworth
Fire at the Four Corners Cafe near Ainsworth started about 9 45 am and spread through the interior. Firefighters from Ainsworth Columbus Junction and Washington battled the blaze using water tanks on trucks and contained the fire after extensive damage to the rafters and interior. Operator Larry Littlejohn said business would be suspended and hopes to restore emergency power for refrigeration during repairs.
