Second riot by L A negroes ends in police control
In Los Angeles a second major riot in Watts prompted armed patrols and a phalanx advance by about 650 officers. Dick Gregory was shot in the left leg while aiding police. 18 arrests, injuries to several, and looting reported as authorities chased dispersed crowds across an eight block zone.

In the Clear Lake Lake Okoboji and Spirit Lake areas operators are locking exit doors to curb crowds. Fire Marshal Wilbur Johnson will inspect venues next week and may require panic bars and outside opening doors. Violators get 30 days to comply or face charges. Fire deaths and losses for the first half of the year are up slightly from 1964.

National Hobo Convention Heads to Britt Iowa

Johnson weekend relaxation at LBJ Ranch in Texas

Rich lead vein found in Joplin but buried by law
Construction workers found a pure vein of lead eight feet underground near a new building site in Joplin. The vein measured about one and a half feet wide and four feet long, described as free lead by metallurgist Dan Stewart. City ordinances banning mining inside the town will keep the deposit buried, and owner Gilbe Roper will proceed with construction despite the find.

Phillip F La Follette 68 a member of Wisconsin’s famed political family remained in critical condition with an undisclosed illness. He was admitted August 3 and his partner Gordon Singkin said his condition had improved but remained critical. La Follette served three terms as governor after his 1930 election at 34 and is son of Robert M La Follette the longtime senator.

Viet Cong Hit In Mekong Delta Battle
U S backed forces killed an estimated 256 Viet Cong in heavy fighting near Can Tho in the Mekong Delta. In Pleiku area fighting paratroops and infantry pressed a strong Communist push, while Viet Cong mortars hit Duc Co despite no reported casualties. US and Vietnamese airpower reportedly added about 100 more Viet Cong killed.
