Des Moines report says Iowa levied a record 411,046,506 in property taxes for 1961 driven by real estate personal and utilities taxes. Total valuation rose to 6.516 billion with school taxes leading the levy and state taxes showing a decline.
On the first anniversary of the Berlin Wall Communist and West Berlin police clashed with tear gas, smoke and water cannons. West Berliners shouted insults across the border while security forces fired back as Mayor Willy Brandt addressed the crowd. Allies pledged support as tensions remained high.
Lewis Marston of Washington is reported making satisfactory progress at Veterans Hospital Iowa City after serious injuries from a collision nine miles southwest of Iowa City on Saturday morning. The wreck involved a feed truck driven by Roland Maxwell of Kalona.
Coach Harold Stevens outlines reporting dates for football players. Seniors report August 20 for equipment, juniors and several contacted sophomores report August 21, and freshmen and other sophomores begin first day of school workouts. Letters have been sent to involved players. Physicals start at 12:30 for all listed players next week.
A car struck two children on South Marion Avenue. Robert McFadden nine died at the scene. Diane McFadden eleven was injured and hospitalized in Iowa City. Police responded and rushed them to hospital. details were unavailable.
Water safety instructors and volunteers who aided the annual Red Cross learn to swim program at Washington municipal pool were honored at a Captain's Table meeting. Howard Anderson awarded emblems. several volunteers received fourth, second, and first year honors. The program enrolled 967 participants with 221 certified. hours logged by staff totaled 1,883 across instructors swimmer aides safety aids timers and monitors. Mrs. Richard Schiebel named water safety chair for next year. officers announced for the summer program and committee members listed.
Kenichi Horie, 23, a weekend sailor from Osaka, completed a 5200 mile solo voyage in a 19 foot boat. He quit his auto parts job May 12 and sailed into San Francisco Bay after four hours at anchor awaiting clearance. He faced storms at five points and survived when two portholes were torn away.
A 22 year old Wayland resident Christie Sinn was struck by a backing vehicle near Noble while visiting relatives. She sustained a broken rib but avoided more serious harm and was hospitalized at Burlington. The driver reportedly backed a car from a garage prompting the accident on the rural farm grounds.

Milford Lynall Cook a 45 year old Washington man was found dead in a car parked along a rural road near Coppock after a hose connected to the exhaust entered the vehicle. Jefferson County Medical Examiner Dr C F Watson ruled it an apparent death by own action. Two Washington High School graduates Paul Evans and Tom Brown discovered the car and attempted revival efforts. Cook was a former Richland High School graduate, paper cutter at McCleery Cumming Calendar Factory, and member of the Moose Lodge. Funeral services are set for Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. with burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. Survivors include his wife Darline a son James and his mother Martha Cook.
Six people died in five Iowa accidents over the weekend including two in an airplane crash and one drowning. The toll brings the year total to 325, with 55 fewer deaths than last year at this date. Victims named include Joseph Worthman Joseph Haugan Larry Lafley George Bennett Mrs Bessie Bennett Wesley Cochran Troy McMahon and Edward Houck. The plane crash near Garrison killed Glenn Wilhelms and Joe Kahoutek. Autopsy planned for the Boone death and the drowning occurred in the Cedar River at Cedar Rapids.
Max H. Richenberger 45 died at Veterans Hospital in Iowa City after six days as patient. Native of Wayland he ran a Birmingham cafe for 16 years. Service at Wayland Mennonite Church with Rev. Kenneth Honius. Burial in North Hill Cemetery. Survived by wife Alice, two sons Craig and Steven, parents Jacob and Anna, sister May, brother Glenn. twin sister predeceased him.
Gov. Norman Erbe addressed about 10,000 former Iowans in Long Beach at their annual picnic. He highlighted Iowa tourism growth and other exciting developments, and recounted travel hurdles after a grounded jet forced a replacement from Des Moines.
Radio Moscow reports Maj. Adrian Nikolayev completed 37 orbits in Vostok III and Lt. Col. Pavel Popovich finished 21 in Vostok IV as they continue manual control and space duties. Both feel well and report normal ship functioning amid an ongoing orbital mission.
Soviet Ambassador Anatoly Dobrynin met with Secretary of State Dean Rusk for about 20 minutes in Washington. He said the talks touched on Germany and German peace talks, but emphasized Russia's space achievements and the potential for future U.S.-Soviet cooperation in outer space. The meeting occurred on the Berlin Wall anniversary.
Gov Norman A. Erbe said federal courts should not intervene in Iowa's apportionment, though he welcomed the UPI report of a federal suit filed in Des Moines by the Iowa Federation of Labor. He backs the Shaff plan but notes it won’t fully fix representation. the legislature must redraw seats every 10 years.
