Des Moines reporting shows the state health department weekly tally lists whooping cough with 37 cases as Iowa's most prevalent disease, followed by scarlet fever with 26 cases. Public health notes the spread and ranking of illnesses across the state.

New Hampton volunteer fireman Alva H. Kammeyer married Marella M. Crawford after answering a fire call at the Matt Nulty farm when lightning struck. The ceremony began at 10 a.m. after the unit responded to the emergency.
Ottumwa reports the seventeenth annual state convention closed with elections and installations of officers. Des Moines' Mrs. Maurice L. Northup elected president. Coon Rapids' Mrs. George R. Whisler vice president. Des Moines' Mrs. M Myrton Shelley secretary. Eldridge's Mrs. Forrest Tomlinson treasurer. Sioux City's Mrs. Oscar Hanson named historian.
The Iowa City board of education authorized a new elective course in the high school curriculum taught by history instructor Fred M. Jones. Superintendent Opstad said it targets ninth and tenth grade students and aims to help them select a life work, covering vocation requirements through text study lectures and supplementary reading.
Herman J Robertson Jr. age 22, son of Mr and Mrs H J Robertson, was electrocuted while bending a neon tube in his father's electrical shop in Cedar Rapids. The tube broke, the arc struck his chest, and a 15,000 volt line short circuited through his body. He was found dead moments later by his father.
Richard Kimmel, nine, clung to a log spinning in the Cedar River to avoid a dam, was towed to safety after suffering shock. his bathing suit in tatters, he remained otherwise unharmed.

William Jackson a 33 year old Davenport Black former convict admitted robbing two women in Clinton park after menacing them with an ice pick. He forced them to stay still then took 40 cents and fled. Jackson said he lived in Clinton ten years ago and had served a five year sentence at Fort Madison penitentiary since.
D. R. Munro aged 82, former Washington County representative, died suddenly on his West Chester area farm. He collapsed in a field and was found after a noon search. Believed heart attack. Funeral plans pending at L. A. Jones Funeral Home. Survived by daughter Olive, son Will S. Munro, and Ralph Munro, a Farfield attorney. wife predeceased.
Russell Johnson of Iowa Southern Utilities was injured when a pole broke while he and a crew removed an old electricity line near the Young American school house. He fell with the pole, breaking his arm and fracturing his elbow, and is hospitalized in Washington county hospital.
Washington informed London that the United States will insist on protecting the rights of American Jews in the Holy Land. An exchange of notes between Ambassador Bingham and British Foreign Secretary Eden discussed Britain's plan to end the mandate and partition Palestine. Britain said the U S would be kept informed of developments affecting American residents in Palestine.
Four year old Joan Kuleba was found dead in a vacant house in New York after an assault. Police investigation underway as authorities identify suspect and circumstances surrounding the fatal attack.
A human hand thigh and foot were found in a Keokuk city dump prompting a police investigation. Early examination suggests the person had not been dead long.
Miss Eleanor Appel of Dubuque is visiting for a few days at the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Sbavzon.
Sixty five people attended the tenth annual Washington County Cow Testing Association picnic held at Wellman marking a decade of operation. Al vin Lueder serves as tester. judging teams from Morton Emde and M W Miller were selected to represent the county at the Waterloo dairy cattle congress September 27 to October 3.
Senator Hugo Black’s nomination as associate justice of the Supreme Court was approved today by a Senate Judiciary Committee sub committee and ordered favoring report to the full committee after an unsuccessful effort to block the nomination by Senator Austin. The vote was 13 to 1.

Funeral services for Al Fields are to be held at 4 30 Saturday afternoon at the L A Jones funeral home. Rev Carl W Klein to conduct. Burial will be in Elm Grove cemetery. The body arrives in Columbus Junction from St Paul at seven this evening. Mrs Fields and their son Dick accompany the body. Fields died suddenly earlier in the week at Chelan Washington where he and his wife had arrived to visit their two sons Fritz and Dick.
Iowa City high school graduates may now need only one year of mathematics instead of two after a board recommendation from Supt. Ivor A. Opstad. The change aligns with new college entrance prerequisites, including at the University of Iowa, reducing math requirements for admission.

Iowa official to decide if Eva Estrada was legally divorced when Michael Estrada died in an explosion on July 9. If deemed divorced, payment of a $15 weekly workers compensation could go to the son, otherwise the widow seeks benefits as surviving dependent.

Mrs Lenora King of St Claire Missouri confessed to police that she fatally poisoned her six year old son Jack by feeding a hamburger laced with poison. She planned to kill her five year old daughter Joanne and herself but changed her mind. The boy died at City hospital after removal from his hotel room. The daughter refused the meal saying it burned, and the mother feared leaving the girl alone.
In Shanghai the siege between Japanese and Chinese forces intensified as shells set houses ablaze in the Kiang Wan area and elsewhere. 1,100 American marines and other foreigners fortified the international settlement while Nanking mobilized Chinese manpower and both sides reinforced positions.
The federal government blocks more than 100 million dollars in stock and bond issues by mining promoters amid gold boom. Treasury buys gold at 35 an ounce worldwide, with US production at 4,313,122 ounces in 1936 valued at 159.96 million dollars, up 703,000 ounces from 1935.
An uptown five story apartment building fire caused two deaths and nine injuries. One victim was identified as Kenny by last name, another remained unidentified. Fire officials cited a cigarette as the apparent cause.
Robert R. Noonan, clerk of district court, issued a wedding license yesterday, the first in Washington county in over two weeks. The license was granted to Myron LeRoy Salladay and Dorothy Leona Prebys, both of Washington, following a dry spell since July 27. Mrs. Merle Gardner of Wellman was seen shopping in Washington today.
