Washington High sets August 22 as Fee Day for 1975-76

Washington High School announces Fee Day on Friday August 22 for 1975-76 registration. Students will pay book rent, locker and athletic fees, purchase lunch tickets and insurance, have photos taken, and finalize class schedules and driver education paperwork ahead of the August 25 start. Several time slots outline senior and junior registration by alphabet and by course, with special early hours for selected programs.

4 H Livestock Entries Set for Fair in Washington County

Washington County 4 H members enter livestock for the Town State Fair per Andy Rowe Extension Aide. Most animals must be on grounds by Thursday August 14 with judging on Friday and Saturday. Grand champion market arrow at 1 p.m. Saturday and grand champion market beef at 3 30 p.m. Saturday. Thursday judges for 4 H horses and ponies and crossbred ewe lambs. Listed entrants include Eric Graber Crawfordsville and others across beef heifer, market beef, horse, dairy, swine, and sheep classes.

Four 4-H presenters set for Iowa State Fair

Three senior Washington County 4-H members advance to the Iowa State Fair Communications Division after county contest wins. Kevin Horn presents Gun Safety at 9 a.m. Tuesday August 19 in Room 2, Cathy Huntsberger hosts A Cool Meal at 2 30 p.m. in Room 1, and Bob Stutzman covers Soil Conservation at 10 a.m. in Room 3. The event runs August 18 to noon August 23 in the Exhibits Building with daily orientation at 8 30 a.m. and 4 p.m. wrap ups. Cheri Wheeler will join in the Dress Revue on Monday and Tuesday.

Summer Arts and Drama Slide Show at Washington Library

A slide presentation of Summer Creative Arts and Drama activities will be shown at 7 pm tonight in the upstairs gallery of the Washington Public Library in conjunction with a graphic exhibit. Mayors led by Harold Johnson in the Southeast Multi-county Solid Waste Agency will sign temporary permits to keep community landfills running until SEMCO’s three county site opens in mid September. Kington’s site nears closure while Wayland’s Leichty Construction installs a final cover. regional opening hinges on scale and office building at Richland site.

Seven week dry spell ends with helpful rain in Washington

A near one inch rainfall ends a seven week drought in Washington area aiding corn and soybean crops. Thunderstorms produced 0.98 inches, easing heat and moisture stress after July dryness. Brush fire nears Hoover Dam power lines in Sunland CA

Flames from a 4400 acre brush blaze threaten transmission towers as firemen trim dry brush to protect the Hoover Dam to Los Angeles power line corridor. The line was shut down Tuesday after winds rekindled the five day fire.

One-Man Show of Wikoff Art in Wilmington Delaware

Charles Phillip Wikoff presents a 67-work exhibit at the Exhibit Hall of Wilmington Savings Fund Society Aug 5 to 22 featuring acrylics oils watercolors tempera pencil and ink. The former Washington County resident studied at Iowa Wesleyan College and the University of Delaware and now works as a graphic artist for Delmarva Power.

Power outage planned for Washington area Thursday

Iowa Southern Utilities Co will cut electrical service twice on Thursday for about 45 minutes each. Affected areas include Green Meadow, route 92 west of Washington, West Fifth Street, and nearby rural areas. Work is for moving transmission lines to support a new radio tower with outages around 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Local customers will experience temporary loss of power.
