Grain misdealings spark Senate hearing in Iowa

UPI reports in Durand era text: USDA grain division chief in New Orleans calls irregularities in the grain scandal a “way of doing business” between private inspectors and large elevators. Washington board approves training standards and new penalties

The board approved a new set of training standards for Washington athletes after hearing from Athletic Director Tom English and coaches Dale Harter and Jim Rossen. English cited community backlash on rules and said the process involved coaches, athletes, parents, and administrators. The regulation strengthens penalties for drinking smoking and drug use. A special 8 15 p m meeting was scheduled for September 10 to consider transferring 40 acres from Highland to Washington for a student to attend Washington schools.

Weather: Rain Breaks Up Through Friday With Mild Temps

Occasional rain this afternoon and tonight with an early end to the shower pattern by Friday. Expect cool conditions with highs in the mid to upper 70s Friday and today, lows in the upper 60s tonight. Winds from the northeast to east around 10 mph. Measurable rain chances remain high 70 percent this afternoon and tonight, 60 percent on Friday.

Marr estate to fund Washington hospital and YMCA

Roy Marr's estate will provide about $150,000 split roughly $75,000 each to Washington County Hospital and the Washington YMCA. Trustees consider selling blue chip stocks to fund the bequests, with cashing stocks versus bonds under review as market conditions shift. Construction of a $400,000 Medical Office Building aimed for May 7, 1976, moves ahead.

Adult student strong advocate of lifelong education

Mrs. Gifford Morrison, 47, of Iowa City, returned to the University of Iowa to study philosophy sociology and education after 25 years out of school. She credits lifelong learning with personal happiness and community action, notes the value of adult courses for both men and women, and says her life experience helps her excel with 30 college hours and all A grades.

Thurmond blasts Ford amnesty at Amnets meeting

Sen. Strom Thurmond criticized President Ford's amnesty program in Des Moines saying the laws must be enforced to unite the country. He opposes unconditional pardons for deserters and draft dodgers and favors case by case review by courts. Thurmond spoke at the Amnets convention, keynote address to up to 1000 delegates.
