The report states a missile downed the plane but a tire blowout may have led to loss of control. The car rolled end over end, ending upside down in a deep ditch. Patricia was thrown from the vehicle. She received treatment at Washington County Hospital and was released.
A U S Navy A4 Skyhawk was shot down about 50 miles southwest of Hanoi in a surface to air missile strike. The pilot was presumed killed with no parachute sighted. Another Skyhawk was crippled but the pilot landed aboard the Midway at night.
The Washington Community school board acted on teacher contracts and staffing, approved kindergarten and junior high English hires at Lincoln and a new first grade position, and accepted resignations of two junior high English teachers. They discussed tuition, hot lunch letters, and upcoming elections and route changes.
The Iowa State Highway Commission invites bids for asphaltic concrete resurfacing of Highway 78 in Washington, Henry, Jefferson and Keokuk counties. Adult western corn rootworm beetles identified in Jefferson and Henry Counties with likely presence in Washington County. Heavy northern rootworm infestations cause losses. beetles feed on silks leaves and pollen and can be green with three darker wing bands.
James Bell son of Mr and Mrs Stewart Bell of Washington was injured about 11 am today when his foot slipped under a power mower at the Bell home west of Washington. A graduate of Washington High School this past year he was alone at the time and sought help by telephone. He received hospital treatment for the loss of the end of two toes on his left foot and his condition was reported satisfactory this afternoon.
United Press International reports generally fair weather across Iowa with southwesterly winds 15 to 20 mph this afternoon. Lows tonight expected in the middle 60s and upper 60s likely in the southwest region.

Son of Frank and Anna Marek, married Mae Simpson Jan 11 1928. Lived in Kalona and Wellman areas before moving near Wellman 20 years ago. Member of Methodist Church and veteran of World War I. He belonged to Masonic Order Odd Fellows and Eastern Star.
At the 17 nation disarmament conference in Geneva Lord Chalfont pledged Britain will never consent to a Western nuclear force arrangement that gives West Germany control. Soviet negotiator Tsarapkin dismissed the pledge saying Chalfont said nothing new as Russia demands exclusion of any nuclear force before a treaty. Public remarks align with U S positions but Russia remains opposed. Also noted: local swimming team triangular meet details with Sigourney and Grinnell, timings, and spectator guidance.
