Betty Jane Cornwell aged 4 died after running across a highway in front of her farm home. She suffered a fractured skull as a car struck her while returning from a children's party. She was the youngest of seven children of Mr and Mrs C A Cornwell.
Mayor J F Humphrey and Marshal A Viestenz ordered the shutdown of several dice games and a fan dance at the towns fifty fifth annual soldiers reunion.
Four year old Leroy Eugene De Raad watched his father Arthur DeRaad shoot rats at the DeRaad farm barn. A bullet deflected by a rock struck the boy, who died hours later at Hull hospital from a punctured lung.
Des Moines police were asked to assist in the search for 18 year old Bernard Loth of Fort Dodge who disappeared after attending a C M T C camp at Fort Des Moines army post on the night of August 4. His father, attorney Alan Loth, has conducted a private search across the Midwest for more than a week without success.
Diane Kuehnert, a one year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Raymond Kuehnert of Ogden, believed to be the youngest child to visit the Iowa statehouse dome. On Wednesday the family, with two older children Lawrence and Dixie Lee, climbed 387 steep steps with Mr Kuehnert an engineer on a pipeline project carrying Diane up and down.
In Fort Dodge, the Toliks woke to find two cars in front of their home after Mrs. Tolik drove home what she thought was their auto. Police later identified the second car as belonging to Robert Lentz who reported it stolen.
Six vehicles collided on a highway three miles east of Sidney due to smoke from burning stubble. C A Schivel of Washington DC and K C Parrish of Lowell MA collided head on, followed by Charles Hammons and Carl Keller of Beaver Crossing NE who were honeymooning. An A Pier son of Sidney and an unidentified car crashed into the wrecks. no serious injuries reported.
Merritt C. Speidel Iowa City publisher forms Incorporation with $100,000 capital to run a central service organization for newspapers in Iowa Ohio California and Colorado. Officers include Speidel president Mrs Speidel vice president and Harry Bunker secretary treasurer and general manager. Plans include improving news and future expansion.
Dearborn Michigan August 12 4INS A suspected dynamite plot to destroy the Ford River Rouge factory where 8000 people work was revealed today by Detective Morris ing. Enough dynamite to blow up the plant was found in a tunnel used for power and steam lines feeding the plant.
Entries for the state fair baby contest closed last night in Des Moines as organizers announced the event details and expected participants for the upcoming show.
Shanghai news reports Chinese forces surrounding the city and fortifying key points while Japanese warships enter the harbor. Foreign detachments including Americans, British, and French in Shanghai are mobilized as open hostilities loom between Chinese and Japanese forces. Fighting also erupts north with Japanese victory at Hankow and heavy casualties near Liangshiang.
A son born to Mr and Mrs Orrie Kephart of Keota at Washington County Hospital last night breaks a run of girl births. The Kephart baby arrived at 11 15 weighing two pounds fifteen ounces and is reported in fair condition.
Kalona August 12 Lewis R Lemley about 50 suffered a fractured tibia in a fall from the roof while repairing a chimney. The scaffold gave way causing a fall to a cement sidewalk. He was badly bruised and injured his back and was taken to Washington County Hospital for X rays.
The United States seeks authority to lease six destroyers to Brazil as part of a broader plan to establish a permanent fleet of 120 destroyers stationed in Latin American countries. The aim is to deter old world powers and protect the western hemisphere while ships remain U S property and can be recalled.
Washington county farmers are invited to a farm picnic in Iowa City City Park next Tuesday August 17. Speakers include R M Evans and Harry Brown with state conservation committee members attending. Programs start 10 30 a m with a picnic basket to bring. Rain or shine the event will move to the University field house if needed.

At noon today the upper structure of the old Sanford livery stable was torn away leaving only the south wall. Washington’s last horse and buggy era building is rapidly disappearing as lumber is sold off and the barn is reduced to piles. Carl Jung Kluth bought the property and is selling the lumber.

The 51 year old Democrat faced mixed reactions in the Senate with some urging committee review. Black rose from Birmingham police court judge to solicitor for Jefferson County before his 1927 Senate election.
Mrs Meinz Koehler, 65, died this morning at ten minutes before six at her home on the west edge of Ainsworth from a heart attack. She had been active in the United Presbyterian church and its women’s groups. Funeral services are set for Saturday at 2 PM at the Ainsworth United Presbyterian church, with burial in the local cemetery.
