Census Bureau finds 6 percent of Americans, about 4.4 million households, received food stamps in July 1975. Police armed with submachine guns opened fire on demonstrators who burned buildings and tried to storm a police station in Cape Town. Gen. Ford to sign law enabling swine flu immunization start
The White House will have President Ford sign emergency legislation to shield vaccine makers from swine flu lawsuits and to permit a September start for mass immunization. McGaa Faces Second Assault Charge in Iowa Crimes
Riverside man Eugene T. McGaa, 29, charged with intent to inflict great bodily injury for an Aug 2 assault on a bicyclist near West Chester. He is charged with a second, similar count for a June 10 attempted assault on a Des Moines woman near the Highway 218 and 22 junction east of Riverside. Luann Morris, 36, identified McGaa in a lineup after hitchhiking near Iowa City. He was released Wednesday night on a surety bond.

Two Riverside bartenders Inez H. Schrader and John D. Goldsberry were convicted of misdemeanor illegal sale of alcohol to a minor. Sleep causes crash near West Jefferson and South Marion
An early Wednesday crash near West Jefferson and South Marion caused $750 damage to two vehicles. Russell L. Fenn, 18, of Washington, said to have fallen asleep while traveling south on South Marion at 6:30 am, rear-ending a legally parked car owned by Linda A. Sanders, 19, of Washington. There were no injuries. Fenn was charged with failure to have control.
