Bertrand Adams of Webster City and William L Bunp of Muscatine, University of Iowa art graduates, put finishing touches on large frescoes to be publicly dedicated in the lobby of the new federal building this afternoon in Dubuque.
Glenn Mangold 37 son of Mr and Mrs John Mangold sr of near Ryan was killed threshing at Vincent Drummy home near Ryan. He fell through a hay chute in the barn and suffered a broken neck in the accident.
Audubon National Guard unit departed Audubon for Brayton and then Camp Ripley Minnesota for maneuvers only to have officers learn their guns were left behind. Vehicles rushed the arms to the company to correct the oversight.
William Long 68 of Beaconsfield died when he fell from a wagon loaded with oats at neighbor George Pidcock’s farm. The fall startled his team which bolted, dragging the wagon and crushing his skull.
A swarm of grasshoppers gathered around Arnolds Park as they moved from fields to Okoboji lakes. The insects climbed lines and fishing poles, dropping into bait cans and disrupting anglers on the water.
In Ottumwa Iowa Edward Ruffing a 44 year old bachelor farmer living west of the city died after a July illness diagnosed as Rocky Mountain spotted fever. It is carried only by the wood tick and is not contagious. This case is noted as the twelfth in Iowa medical history.
Charles City sheriff Kn. F. Atherton reported possession of almost a gallon of marijuana powder along with candy chewing gum tobacco 10 inner tubes a radio a rifle a small mantel clock and a car rim.
Dow City consolidated school officials discovered a deficit of about 16600 in the treasurer Glenn Leslie’s account following his death on July 10. Sheriff A C Greene of Crawford county reports checks of varying amounts were written and cashed after endorsements by Leslie.
May Milley staged a disruption after being denied a grocery order. Relied officers report she overturned four tables of papers, a table lamp, and other items, and broke a window on the second floor of the courthouse during the Muscatine County supervisors meeting.
Slater Oley Nelson former national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic celebrated his ninety third birthday at home. Relatives organized two receptions one in the afternoon and another Tuesday night to accommodate the crowd.
A strike call on the retail merchants delivery system stopped parcel deliveries to many downtown stores. Higher wages are demanded. Furniture truckers are already on strike and a heat riot erupted at an ice cream company after a truck breached a picket line.
Former Senator Brookhart urges Senate Agriculture Committee to approve a bill enabling the secretary of agriculture to fix domestic farm product prices. The measure, sponsored by Senator McAdoo, calls for government control of crop surplus and includes the ever normal granary plan. Brookhart says the secretary would estimate annual crop output and fix exportable percentages, setting prices to cover production costs with a profit for farmers.
Governor Kraschel assails Democrats and Republicans as he blasts Agriculture Committee members for delaying a farm bill until next session. He defends President Roosevelt and calls him the administration’s biggest figure as he seeks a permanent farm program.
Des Moines reports higher tax receipts as the state tax board notes a rise in sales taxes for the April to June quarter. The board says $3,359,978 was collected, up from $3,105,685 last year, plus $338,558 in car use tax from April 16 to June 30.
Marion Illinois August 11 Jesse Wilson aged 2s survived over four hours in an abandoned coal mine shaft. He walked out to say he was all right but hungry. He was taken to Hertin hospital for examination.
The Sigourney Band presents a varied program in Central Park featuring soloists LeRoy Coon and John Richard Schwenke and pieces including Cavalcade Overture, Bohemian Girl Overture, Ballet Music from Faust, and The Big Bass Drum March. Mr and Mrs Jim Stewart of Crawfordsville were seen shopping in Washington.

Charles Reed says statewide drought risks loom in Crawford Worth and Franklin counties while Washington Mahaska Iowa and Jones stay strongest. Farmers face an average 91 percent crop condition with past droughts cited as a warning of possible losses.
Negus, with expertise in livestock selling, takes charge of the former Busby Manufacturing building in northeast Washington and converts it into a livestock sale pavilion. W J Egan known as Bill joins the McCormick Deering Store in Washington as bookkeeper and repair department head. He comes from Ottumwa where he worked under George Shanklin and has served the company two and a half years.
Camp Dodge reports detail the 113th regiment squadrons practicing recon patrols with Troop II and K as enemy. Highlights include a rider’s crash, a bloody nose, and a barbed wire cut. Aug. 7 covers a regimental field inspection with equipment displays and praise for Troop FR. Aug. 8 notes continued coverage.
The House rules committee postponed a scheduled meeting to report a special rule for wage and hour legislation after Southern Democrats mounted an insurgency. Democratic leaders fought to keep the Black Connery bill alive as Southerners opposed it, with leaders warning the bill could be blocked.
Lincoln police said Gene Kempf, 17, is alive and well after a postcard arrived from Alliance Nebraska ending a search for the Mt. Pleasant lad who ran away from home. A suitcase found along Salt Creek prompted the initial search by authorities.
The U S Treasury reports a larger deficit than a year ago as revenues rise in early fiscal year while recovery outlays drop by 126 million dollars. From July 1 to August 7 the government spent 79,462,618 more than it received.
Ed Simmering returned home from Chicago with thirty six hogs averaging 231 pounds. He received 13.50 per hundredweight for the hogs on Monday’s market at Woods brothers in Chicago. He also shipped some sheep on the same trip.
The lower federal court procedural bill, part of Roosevelt era reforms, moved to the White House after House approval of the conference report and Senate assent. It allows the attorney general to intervene in lower courts to defend public interest cases and enables direct appeal to the Supreme Court from lower courts on constitutional questions.
