Sheryl Swenson newly crowned Miss Washington County will attend Muscatine events Saturday. She is to participate in the crowning of the 1972 Miss Muscatine County and may appear at the Chamber of Commerce back to school parade in Washington that afternoon.
Officials issue final reminder for a parade open to children 12 and under. The event starts at 2 p.m. Saturday with registration from 1 p.m. in front of the Chamber of Commerce office.
The legislative tax study committee, amid advice from county assessors, voted 11 to 1 to recommend dropping county dog licensing. It noted administrative costs exceed license revenue, while confirming owners would still need city licenses and rabies vaccination for pets.
All students registered for driver's education next year must secure driving permits before school begins. Law requires a valid permit to drive with an instructor. Classes include two hours of classroom work and one driving period weekly. oldest students take first semester. Written tests occur at city hall on Wednesday.
A Miami resident Allen Paul Goldstein, 48, was to appear in Davenport Municipal Court after being arrested on consumer fraud charges. Police said he sold items at the Mississippi Valley Fair at inflated prices while promising a “good deal.” He operated from a truck space west of the grandstand after multiple complaints.

Meanwhile two lawsuits filed in Kalona could award over one million dollars to the estates of Mary Esther Mazzoli and Gordon Elliott from a 1972 auto crash, naming Pat Durian and others tied to local liquor-licensed venues as defendants. Durian faced manslaughter and drunken driving charges, later pleading guilty to the latter.
Frank B. Fitzsimmons head of the Teamsters Union labeled McGovern’s welfare tax and Vietnam proposals nonsense and an enemy of labor. He endorsed Nixon and urged union members to reject McGovern. Clark MacGregor echoed a tough, exit polls guarded stance as McGovern tours New England. Shriver accused Nixon of missing a chance to end the war.
Weather bulletin notes showers and thunderstorms mainly in eastern Iowa tonight with lows in the 60s. Saturday remains partly cloudy and hot with highs in the upper 80s to near 90s. Zones 9 and 13 face early tonight shower or storm chances, lows 65 to 70.
