In Des Moines an three story Grang apartment building collapsed after torrential rains. Residents evacuated as brick sections fell and water tore up the sidewalk. A six inch sag appeared in the floor. authorities ordered all to vacate as the sidewall crumbled into the street damaging furniture and clothing.
Lever Bros salesman Jim Rush distributed Lifebuoy shaving cream to all Whisker contest participants and gave special razor sets to Whisker club President Al Goddard Mayor Lloyd Lytle and Lew Warren. J. Martin White lay very ill in Iowa City hospital under observation after a period of serious illness.
Shortly before midnight a Model T Ford driven by Henry J Hubbell of Wellman stalled on a hill west of town on Up road 92 and was rear ended by a car driven by Clifford Pohren of Brighton. Hubbell suffered chest injuries and possible rib fractures. he was taken to the county hospital for X rays. His father Jacob Hubbell, 77, sustained bruises. Pohren’s driver received facial bruises. Poor visibility from heavy rain contributed to the accident.
City park board chairman J E Lemmon commends Mrs Rose Reid for raising funds for the illuminated fountain in Central Park. He notes strong cooperation from women’s groups and souvenir sellers, and says contributions will continue to be reported as total cost remains unclear.
Diplomatic observers in London reported relief at Albert Forster's speech to Hitler signaling no immediate move to solve the Danzig question. The speech was deemed defensive and praised for delaying any decisive action. September events were anticipated to reveal Europe’s diplomatic path.
German and Italian foreign ministers held a three day Salzburg conference to outline future Axis actions in Europe and the Orient. They planned to discuss the Danzig Polish dispute southeastern Europe and possible Japanese adhesion to a full Axis military alliance.
President Roosevelt said that if a real war crisis develops in Europe or the Far East he will immediately call Congress back in a special session to enact neutrality laws based on international law. If a crisis seems imminent before reconvening he will convene Congress to keep the United States from involvement in a conflagration.
London endured an early morning blackout maneuver with fighter squadrons and anti-aircraft guns defending the city. Observer corps aided vigilance though the operation caused casualties, with 14 aircrew members killed in crashes.
Washington's Slab Town Bargain Days will be Friday and Saturday August 18 and 19 shifting from Thursday. Kalona's seventh annual home coming on August 4 causes the change to avoid conflict. Merchants keep slabs up for citywide sales with modern goods at low prices. A festival features the centennial crop of whiskers disposed in Central Park.
Washington county is assured of Rural Rehabilitation program support for the year ending June 39, 1940. Farm Security Administration funds are unavailable for this year’s lending, says Cecil Brooks, Washington county rural rehabilitation supervisor. Loans aid farmers and sharecroppers needing operating capital, with Farm Management assistance and a focus on a family sized pattern for sustainable living. The agency aims to help families unable to obtain aid elsewhere and encourages early planning for next year.
The Journal calls for tall corn stalk entries of 15 feet or more. Each stalk must rest on a 2 by 2 board tied every three feet with cloth up to two inches wide. Roots trimmed, base to top measured, entry limited to one stalk per farmer, brought to Washington by contest day, no entry fee, photos may be published, ties decided by stalk quality.
Rehabilitation loans are secured by the chattels purchased with the borrowed money and may be repaid in no more than five years at 6 percent interest.
An inch and a quarter of precipitation fell yesterday and overnight in Washington. The cool spell persists with a high of 78 and a low of 62 as August progresses.
Centennial commission plans a third presentation of Washingtons Heritage at Case Field tonight at 8 15 pm barring more rain. About 2000 spectators gathered noon hoping for a clear sky and the event to proceed as the town nears the centennial celebration.
Sunday night union services of Bapt ist Christian Methodist Presbyterian Evangelical and United Presbyterian churches attract large crowds. A sacred concert by the Concert band directed by Kal Keister and harmonica pieces by Charles Mure fork are planned in Central Park from 7 to 7 30 pm with Rev Predmund delivering the sermon. If weather forces cancellation, services move to the Presbyterian church and the concert is omitted.
