The Cedar Falls city council approves the 1938 budget with a three mill tax increase. Estimated expenditures total 352580 dollars with income about 30883 dollars, leaving 42960 dollars from taxes and a large share funded by public utilities profits.
Mrs Lila Me. Allister of Emmetsburg was recovering from shock after reaching into a hen nest and touching a live rattlesnake. The snake struck but missed, and escaped after the incident.
A polished Rock Island Railroad steam train made a test run across Iowa from Minneapolis to Kansas City. Officials and guests praised the nearly vibration free ride as milk stayed perfectly settled in glasses aboard the lounge car.

Elmo Rummelhart of Riverside is hospitalized in Washington county with a fractured signaling arm from a car overturn on highway 22 at Riverside's east edge in front of the Joe Knebel house. He was attempting a turn when the crash occurred, and the arm sustained two fractures along with minor cuts and bruises.
Funeral services for Eva Blick will be held at 1:30 Thursday afternoon at Sherman’s funeral home followed by burial in Grace Hill Cemetery. She died yesterday in the State hospital at Woodward Iowa where she had been for the last 20 years. She was 31 years old and a daughter of Robert and Ida Belle Coats Blick.
Mrs Will EB Jones of Cotten and her niece Martha Bidwell of Farragut visited yesterday afternoon with Mrs Carl Hedges.
Allen James Fields 64 died suddenly of a heart attack while visiting his sons Fritz and Dick in Chelan Washington. Born May 28 1873 in Delta Iowa he worked as a blacksmith in Washington before moving to Chelan. Survived by wife Cora Ruta Jones and children Nathan Bud Fritz Eugene and Mrs Paul Hunt. Funeral plans undecided but services to be held in Washington with burial there. He enjoyed hunting fishing and conservation work and remained active in his shop until a year ago.
Postmaster M. C. DeLong announced the arrival and sale of special three cent stamps commemorating the sesquicentennial of the ordinance of 1787 at the post office after a three week delay. Virginia Dare commemorative five cent stamps will not be available until August 19.
Frank A McCaulley died at 6 10 yesterday evening at his home East Second street after years of declining health Funeral services will be held 10 30 Wednesday at L A Jones funeral home with Dr Arthur Atack of the Methodist church officiating Burial will be at Woodlawn cemetery He was born October 22 1855 in Dutch Creek township and married Clara Kraeaw on October 19 1882 The couple lived on farms near Keota Dutch Creek township and near Washington before settling in town in 1900 Surviving are his wife and other details reported by the obituary

CAMP DODGE Aug 4 A detail of twenty seven men from Troop F left camp early this morning for Fort Des Moines to obtain the horses the National Guard rosters from the 14th Cavalry. The move ensures a mount for each trooper for the camp duration. The detail was commanded by Lieutenant Eldridge.
The troop rode to the rifle range this morning for a combat problem. They moved from 1000 yards to within 2009 yards of targets and opened fire at 20 yards. After the maneuver each trooper fired a few rounds on the pistol range.

Comptroller C B Murtagh sends final compilation to state tax board chair Louis Roddewig as millage is set, with a 9.85 mill levy down 0.73 of a mill to 6,800 on 2,901,000,000 valuation. Local taxes remain dominant with about 90 million annual burden.

Mrs. Lafayette Stout Jr. 61 of West Chester died suddenly at Abbott hospital Oskaloosa where she had been ill since last Saturday. Born Anna Bertha Brown June 29 1886 in Illinois she moved to Washington county in 1897 and married Lafayette Stout Jr Sept 28 1910. Survived by husband nine children and six grandchildren with funeral to be held at Washington Methodist Church.
