Germans Sabotage in Soviet Uranium Mines Reported

Soviet secret police reportedly arrested three members of a German resistance group inside Erz mountains uranium mines near the Czech border. The group, linked to the Free Germany leadership under Marshal Friedrich Von Paulus, allegedly sabotaged mining machinery and organized an underground railway to aid enslaved workers.

Two County Women Die in Des Moines Hospital and Wayland Home

Two local deaths are reported. Mrs Mary Martin 89 longtime Wayland resident died in a Des Moines hospital after a four am admission. Survivors include four sons and two daughters with additional siblings noted. Funeral plans incomplete. Mrs Albert Roth died at Wayland home after a ten day stroke and nine years of illness. Funeral services set for Thursday at 3:24 pm at Zehr funeral home and 2 pm at Wayland Mennonite church. She is survived by husband two children and one brother.

Farm Youths Busy Preparing for Show

Washington county Jr. Livestock show preparations are under way with 4-H youths and leaders at Dave Livingston farm. The event on August 2 and 24 will be larger than past years, featuring FFA and 4-H projects and more entries due to increased enrollment.

Dr. Fred Blick to Serve as Chaplain

I. Fred Blick of St. Louis will depart Thursday for Fr Riley Kansas to assume duties as head chaplain of an air corps unit. He leads the East United Presbyterian Church in St. Louis and serves as a reserve U S Navy officer. He will stay at Ft. Riley this month then return to Washington to meet Mrs. Blick before resuming duties.

Kehoe Recovering After Omaha Hospital Stay

Reports from St. Catherine’s hospital Omaha Nebraska say attorney L J Kehoe is markedly improved today after the August 6 automobile accident. He will be moved to Iowa City hospital when fit. his son Dr Joseph Kehoe is on staff there.

Sheriff Returns From Stockton After Releasing Capper on Bond

Sheriff H. M. Putnam returned Monday evening from Stockton California where he had gone to secure Claude Capper of Wellman. Capper, wanted on a charge of selling mortgaged property, was released under bond.

First Draftees To Get Papers By September 7

Washington reports local draft boards instructed to mail first questionnaires to peacetime registrants on or before September 7. Registration runs Aug 30 through Sept 18 for 18 to 25 year olds, with 19 to 25 drafted for 21 months. Inductions likely not before October 20, depending on Army calls and administrative factors.

Trieste Quarrel Debated in United Nations

Plan Final Rites for Mrs Minnie White 80

Funeral services for Mrs Minnie Agnes White of Ainsworth, who died Monday in a Davenport hospital, are set for Wednesday at 2 PM at the Ainsworth United Presbyterian Church. Rev Ricat Stahmer will officiate. She was the widow of W Carlton White and a longtime church member. Arrangements are with Jones Funeral Home.

Hoover to present bold reorganization ideas to Congress

Former president Herbert Hoover, in West Branch ia on his 74th birthday, said he will present Congress with bold ideas for reorganizing the executive branch. He chairs a commission with Truman administration backing to report by next January. He declined to discuss Europe food exports or current politics.

Former President Hoover Honored At West Branch Gala

Herbert Hoover celebrated his 74th birthday in West Branch Iowa with a community picnic in Hoover park and a parade. The event honored his birthplace with a ceremonial visit to the cottage and included awards, a honorary degree, and a Mutual radio speech after a day of youth group honors and local festivities.

Farm Field Day Set for Sept 11 at Wellman Carl Anderson Farm

Joe Knotek announces the second annual Four District Conservation Field Day and Plowing Contest will be Sept 11 at the Carl T. Anderson farm near Wellman. Event is sponsored by Washington Keokuk and Johnson county soil conservation districts with entries open through the commissioners offices and Farm Bureau. Machinery dealers will exhibit farm implements as local business support continues. Last year’s event drew about 540 attendees.
