Soviet moves to seize control of Berlin food distribution split the city administration. Berlin’s council authorized Paul Fuell sack and staff to move to a western sector building amid a Soviet bid to bar western sector employees. Police divisions also split along east west lines as clashes and arrests emerged in night raids.
Four men arrested near Ana wose are tied to a string of rural school burglaries across Washington Cedar Johnson Jones and Scott counties. Police say the group dismantled stoves and furnace parts during break-ins with little other damage. Suspects Albert Neaker 35 Nahem Simmons 27 William Meaker 17 and Bob Whichter 17 were living west of Buchanan Cedar county when seized as they stripped parts from a rock crusher.
Minnie Agnes White, longtime Ainsworth resident for 55 years, died at nine this morning at Mercy hospital Davenport after a weeklong illness. Funeral plans tentative for Wednesday at 2 PM in United Presbyterian Church Ainsworth with Rev. Robert Stahner officiating. burial in Ainsworth cemetery. Born April 27 1968 in Pekin Illinois widow of W C White. Survived by daughters G A West Evanston Illinois and R E Graham Ottumwa Iowa. sons Donald Des Moines Howard Elimyra N Y Earl Davenport. Jones funeral home Washington in charge.
Dubuque authorities recovered the body of Emery Bellmeyer 52 Platteville Wisconsin from the Mississippi River about 100 feet south of the last sighting with John Mai 84 of Dubuque while fishing Friday morning Coroner Norbert Belir announced the finding yesterday.
Members of Troop A 118th Cavalry Washington National Guard prepared to depart the Armory for Fort Riley Kansas. The unit convoyed with others from the region carrying four motorized units for summer training and boarded a special Milwaukee depot train Saturday night. They were to arrive at Fort Riley late Sunday and return Monday morning August 28 at 8:10 o'clock with sixty enlisted men and all officers of the local troop aboard.
A rebellious Soviet teacher Mik hail Samarin and his family elude repatriation with FBI help while Oksana Kosenkina is in Russian custody. The consul general claims a rescue, and Samarin surrendered to FBI agents seeking an interview. Countess Tolstoy cites a loose rescue network aiding Russians unwilling to go home.
Washington county supervisors contract with Appraisal Engineering of Wisconsin to assist and supervise a countywide real estate appraisal plan. The arrangement, approved by the Iowa State Tax Department, funds training for local workers, assigns field supervision to firm engineers, and aims for accurate unit costs, depreciation schedules, and fair land values across farm and industrial properties.
The Iowa secretary of state filed the full text of Senate File 492 detailing a bond plan of 84 million to fund military bonuses. Eligible veterans would receive 1 per month of domestic service and 12.50 per month of overseas service, with apportionment rules and a 46 percent interest bond. The measure requires a majority vote in the November 2 election and creates a World War II veterans board to administer payments.
Washington County residents posted strong buying power gains in the past year led by a rise in family income and retail sales. The Sales Management survey shows a per family average of 4435, a 16.3 percent increase, with county retail sales reaching 17.984 million on 1947 highs. The quality of market index places the county well above national averages, with local purchases totaling 72 percent of net incomes versus 65 percent nationwide.
The sedan driven by Glenn E B Cupp and a lime truck driven by W P Hicks collided Saturday afternoon four miles south and one mile west of Wellman. Both drivers, Keota residents, were uninjured. Deputy Sheriff Robert Filmore said tall corn at the intersection likely caused the crash by obstructing view. The Cupp car hit a fence corner as the lime truck overturned onto it.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday at 2 PM at Jones funeral home for Mrs America Blick with Rev. T C Polk in charge. Burial followed in Grace Hill cemetery. Pallbearers named were Charles Custer William Hinkle Clyde Tucker and Dave Sehantz.
Funeral services for Selina Sommer were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock in the Wayland Mennonite church with Rev. E. S. Mullett and Rev. Simon Gingerich in charge. Pallbearers included Harold Kauffman Clarence Wyse Dr. Glenn Widmer and others.
Victor Perlo, wartime official, refused to admit or deny knowing Elizabeth Bentley who accuses him of a Soviet spy role. In an American Activities Committee session Bentley identified Perlo as head of a spy ring. Perlo invoked the fifth amendment and declined to answer. Burial noted for Rex Levert in Ficher cemetery with Jones Funeral Home handling.
Four Iowa Republicans join the 1949 bid for speaker as two new candidates W H Nichol as Mason City and M I Hicklin announce after Governors Day. G T Gus Kuester Griswold and Fred Schwenger Davenport had already declared. Kuester faces no Democratic opponent. Nichol as president of the St club joined Beardsley supporters amid a GOP victory outlook.
The Presbyterian Church unanimously voted to extend a call to Dr William J Grossheim of Monticello Iowa to become pastor. He preached yesterday and a congregational meeting on his candidacy was held. A decision from Dr Grossheim is expected within days. the church has been without a regular pastor since February when Rev T E White resigned.
Edward Courval, 29, Rogers City Michigan, a passenger in a collision with another car in Alabama, held his torn throat together with his hands until surgeons arrived and afterward received 26 stitches at a general hospital.
The subject avoided answering whether he knew a person named Robert A. Graham and whether he held Communist Party membership. The text shows a pattern of refusals to admit or deny such associations.
Reports from Omaha indicate L. J. Kehoe, local attorney, injured in an August 6 auto crash near the city, has regained consciousness and shows improvement at St. Catherine's hospital. His companions, Mr. and Mrs. Howard F. Walker and their son Billy, along with Mrs. Walker, remain hospitalized with injuries.
Leslie E. Dunlap delivered the union Sunday evening park service sermon with the theme Seek ye first the kingdom of God. He urged listeners to pursue Christ's gospel as a whole and warned there is no half way method to true happiness. The Washington Y M C A sponsored the service conducted by lay members with Richard A. Stewart presiding.
