Joseph Elser, 17 months old, son of Mr and Mrs John Elser Bundt of Festina, drowned after falling into a yard water tank. His body was recovered by an older brother.
A city roller on Vernon street became unmanageable and careened down a hill tipping over. The front roller broke off and the top crushed. Operator Wallace Bockward escaped injury by jumping as the machine had no brake.
George Koury of Sioux City, a rug salesman, woke to find his car missing after staying with relatives. All his rugs, valued at 130 dollars, were stolen, and police found the auto burning west of the city on Highway 30. Thieves had stripped most identifying marks before the fire.
Bedford officers report the arrest of J H Dickson of Diagonal on a warrant filed by about 15 Bedford FHA home buyers. Dickson allegedly posed as an FHA representative and collected 13 from each buyer with a promise that 10 would be returned if loans were not completed.
At Iowa City a display of queer relics and castiques showcases tools weapons and garments 50 to over 100 years old at the city park. Exhibits include Civil War sword candle moulds a century old shoe last and a 100 year old shawl. A German Bible printed in 1800 is traced to 1804 in the owner's family.
Davenport Elmer R Galdner a 42 year old First Trust and Savings bank teller is jailed on embezzlement charges after police say he admitted stealing 16500 dollars from the bank during 1937 to two weeks ago. Peter Hamos a 44 year old East Side night club operator was arrested after Galdners confession naming Hamos as responsible for the shortage.
Sidney Sidney's fifteenth annual Rodeo opens next Tuesday for four days. Col W T Johnson of San Antonio, Texas supplies Brahma steers and drones, plus Mexican Longhorns to boost competition. Everett Bowman of Hillwide Oklahoma, last year's world champion cowboy, leads a growing entrant list.
Davenport residents celebrated a Legion parade with New York style ticker tape throws. Hotel and business crowds showered paper shreds over streets in a display echoing Corrigan and Hughes scenes. Some paper bits included ticker tape scraps and torn jewelry and papers fell as the procession moved.
A fine senior Angus calf named Trump owned by Donald Marek is grand champion in the baby beef division at the 4-H club fair. Judge C. W. McDonald presided from ten o'clock with beef calves, heifers, and showmanship to be judged this afternoon.
The Methodist church hosts an open house this evening and tomorrow night from 7 to 9 for the public to view a year’s work by the girl 4-H clubs. Exhibits feature attractively arranged booths and unusually interesting articles.
Des Moines reports predicted relief with cooler temperatures tonight and lower readings in south central and eastern Iowa. The federal forecaster warned of possible thunderstorms this afternoon or tonight. Despite this, heat remained intense statewide with highs around 101 in Albia and precipitation light in northern Iowa yesterday.

Iowa crop reports estimate 1988 corn production at 437,826,000 bushels, down 65,679,000 from last year, with per acre yield at about 4 percent. The outlook raises questions about marketing quotas, amid Secretary Wallace suggesting quotas if the crop is unusually large.
Des Moines pastor Rev. Jack L. Neville, 41, of the Des Moines Evangelistic temple, was arrested on a charge of selling unregistered securities. He called the reports persecution and clarified the church is independent and interdenominational, not connected with the Assembly of God.
A Morris Minnesota deputy returned with Harold Fountain of Daytonville to answer forgery charges after a $206 Minnesota forged check was identified. Albert Orcutt, a Washington grocer manager, said Fountain tried to pass a bad check last Saturday. Edyth Fountain, 18, faces a court hearing for a $50 forged check at Scott Furniture. The pair admitted the forgery findings.
A collision occurred involving a banker and a minister, Rembrandt L. Pingel, with details indicating a traffic incident and the parties involved under review by local authorities.
President of First State Bank of Sioux Rapids and Lian Grove suffered a broken collarbone when the Pingel car collided with another vehicle. Others with undetermined injuries include Mrs. Pingel, their daughter Enid, 10, Dorothy Riley, 16, a Pingel guest, and the Rev. Schuelke pastor of a German Lutheran church in Buena Vista County.
Washington gains a new retail venue as Spurgeons, the Chicago based general merchandise chain, prepares a formal opening Friday at 7 pm with sales beginning 8 30 am Saturday. Harold Johnson leads the Houston area store after stints at Klein Klothing and Willisea. Twenty two shows fill the space with walnut fixtures ivory walls and modern show windows.
Mrs. Katherine Ann Fullerton Markley died Sunday in Los Angeles after 40 years residency there. Born in Crawfordsville on March 1 1862, she was predeceased by husband W Scott Markley who died in 1980. Survived by daughter Mrs Harold Spies of Los Angeles and sister Mrs Addie Shannon of Kansas City. Funeral services were held today.

More than a hundred Y's Men and Y's Mennettes gathered in Cedar Rapids to hear the Washington Y's Mennettes trio sing Once More We Stand. The performance honored Ian McLaren of Melbourne who attends the Midwest Regional Conclave and will join Y's Men's International events in Toronto.
Des Moines reports in a weekly weather bulletin that wind squalls hail and heavy storms across southern Iowa flattened much corn over the past week. Federal meteorologist Charles D Reed notes ears were laid flat and heavy damage may be irreparable.
Fire department was called at 11 15 am to the Ralph Hesseltine residence in the 690 block of East Second Street where a burning pine smell was reported. No fire was found.
Idaho primary results show Democratic Senator James Pope, a Roosevelt ally, defeated by Rep D Worth Clark, a young critic of many New Deal measures. Clark leads with 31,030 to 28,265 as returns from 610 of 802 precincts are counted. Clark to face Republican John Callahan.
Former Senator Lester J. Dickinson of Algona will speak on October 6 at the Dutch Creek corn show. Chairman Carl W. Klein announced the plan with L. M. Elcher, Iowa Republican county chairman. Other names floated include George A. Wilson for governor and Tom Martin for Congress, while Democratic organizers eye Senator Guy M. Gillette or Governor Kraschel for addresses.
