Two Des Moines youths topped the event as Jack Williams won first in the senior division and Don Brooks captured first in the junior division. About 500 spectators attended the contest with 4 entries from eight Iowa cities.
Iowa City Prof. Harry K. Newburn of the University of Iowa College of Education and principal of University High School will travel to England and Scotland to study secondary education and teacher training. Financed by the Carnegie foundation, the study will span several months.
A Rhode Island hen on the John F. E. Larson farm formed a maternal bond with five kittens and nursed them for eight weeks. When the kittens were old enough to care for themselves the hen was confined to keep her from challenging the mother cat during feeding times.
Charles City report shows Frerett Nixt of Marble Rock will not appear in police court for 30 days. Nixt has appeared on intoxication charges for three consecutive Mondays and will wear a ball and chain on his leg as punishment during the period.
Adams County residents again vote down a bond issue for a new courthouse by 242 ballots in a special election. Officials had sought federal aid after the prior defeat, citing the aging building as unsafe.
Four year old West Union child Whichter Haldatn was killed when a tractor driven by a farm hand ran him down beside a barn. He was playing near the building as the operator lost control while grading the yard. The boy’s father is a mute implement dealer in town. His mother sister and brother survive.
Ames reports John Fuller a 20 year old junior at Town State college was found dead on Longs Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park. Park rangers could not confirm if death was from a fall or a struck by a falling rock. Fuller’s body lay on a snow field after being located by another climber. he was the son of A H Fuller, civil engineering professor at Town State college, and was climbing alone.
Marshalltown reports a second drowning of the year as 18 year old Kenneth Weber bumped his head on a raft and sank in a gravel pit condemned for swimming. Despite warnings, local youths continued to swim there.
Bargain news fills the Journal as stores launch a city-wide Dollar Day with summer merchandise moved to make way for new fall stock. Shoppers are advised to come early Thursday morning when many bargains are limited and prices are slashed to clear inventory.

A married 18 year old from Daytonville near Wellman is jailed in Washington county for forgery after cashing a forged $50 check at Scott Furniture. Her husband Harold Fountain, 20, is jailed in Minnesota on a bad check charge. Authorities traced the forged check signed with H L Whitaker and recovered most of the money.
Over 100 entries have pledged for the Dutch Creek corn show with aims for 1000 entries by October 6. Fifteen teams lead by Zene Tinnes, Howard Altenbernd, G. H. Mayer, and R. G. Sheetz have signed many farmers from Washington and Keokuk counties. Entries must be grown in 1988 with no limit on entrants and include diverse corn varieties. Seed producers pledge added premiums and a $100 sweepstakes prize awaits the top 100-car entry.
An intensive manhunt followed a Des Moines station robbery and kidnapping. Two armed gunmen escaped toward Missouri after stealing 44 dollars, releasing the operator outside the city. One suspect claimed to be Floyd Hamilton, though authorities doubt it. other leads tie a second robber to a Wood River bank robbery and the Hagan shooting in New Florence.
Aaron Batterson, longtime Iowa Southern Utilities employee, was killed at the plant while adjusting a belt. Funeral services set for Wednesday at L. A. Jones funeral home, led by Rev. Carl W. Klein, with burial at Elm Grove cemetery. He leaves a widow and seven children. pallbearers are fellow light-plant workers.
