A Newton column notes four Newton boys and one girl under 18 were reported by Kansas City authorities on suspicion of possessing a stolen automobile.
Fairfield resident Minnie John aged 50 was killed when struck by a Burlington road streamlined train two miles west of Fairfield. The incident occurred in a rural area and authorities investigated the crash as a roadside railroad accident.
A contract for a $130,000 girls dormitory at the Iowa state school for the blind was awarded pending approval by the legislative committee on retrenchment and reform and the state executive council. Robert W. Scott of Albert Lea Minnesota won the general contract with a bid of $46,125.
The body of 13 year old Joe Buckroyd will be brought to Fort Dodge for burial. He died in a Navy hospital in Washington D C from an infection while attending the national Scout outing several weeks ago. He was a son of Mr and Mrs Orville Buckroyd.
Des Moines health officials fined five barber shop operators in municipal court for unsanitary conditions. Each fined $25 with $29 returned on promise to clean up the shops.
Last of four inmates from the state hospital for the insane to escape two months ago, 56 year old Independence Peter Rosen thal of Dubuque has been returned here from Galena Idaho.
Albia appoints Tom T. Norris of Manchester as principal of Albia High School succeeding W W Hartzell who was promoted to superintendent Norris has taught at Ottumwa and will assume duties at Albia immediately.
A thief entered the Cedar Rapids dental office of Dr. F. J Clark and stole scrap gold and dental plates valued at fifty dollars. No suspects named and local police investigate the break in.
Kenneth Lamson, 12, acted quickly at the home of T. E. Spencer after hearing noises from the back of the house. He found Octave Versaile, 60, in the cistern pool, lying on his side after a fall, and helped summon aid to save his life.
Davenport Peter Jensen, 64, is in St Luke Hospital with serious razor wounds to chest and abdomen after a bathroom dispute. Police say two roommates fought after Jensen argued about staying in the bathroom too long. Henry Lehew, 63, is jailed without charge as investigators review Jensen’s condition.
Painters working on the courthouse tower flag pole finished the job Saturday afternoon. The top painter, who swayed on the pole, took measurements of the pole: height 27 1/2 feet, bottom thickness 12 inches, top thickness three inches.
Frank McFarlane manager of the Farmers' elevator on North Iowa avenue reported to Sheriff H. M. Putnam that a wheat tester valued at $15 or more was stolen between Saturday night and today. The apparatus includes a copper bucket and scales used to test the weight of wheat and other small grains.
Gene Kempf 17 of Mt Pleasant Iowa is believed alive after his belongings were found and investigators dragged Salt creek. Police report Kempf ran away after family disputes and had been seen talking to a tramp about freight to Denver. The other item notes a canceled US naval visit to Japan and rising tensions in Asia with evacuations and troop movements.
All of the Diagne quintuplets were on the sick list in Calendar Ontario as of August 9 1960. Dr Allen Dafoe ordered prompt measures to halt the illness and visitors were barred from the grounds to prevent spread.
A large maple toppled in strong winds at 414 East Second Street, southwest corner of the Tom Randall house. The roof and a downstairs window were damaged, rain spouts torn off, and a porch post broken when the tree fell between 4:30 PM and 11 PM.
The weekend rainfall totaled 1.05 inches from Saturday night into Sunday morning. Sunday reached a high of 91 degrees with a low of 68 degrees after a warm night.
Shirley Temple pleased crowds at the State Theatre yesterday in a highly action filled program praised for its color and human interest. Victor McLaglen supported Temple as audiences traveled from distant areas to see additional performances expected to run through Tuesday.

Residents will note the valuation base listed as $26,600,926 and the allocations per fund.
Coppock residents in Urrighton announce plans to celebrate the river bridge completion. The bridge is expected to be finished within about two weeks and a date for the celebration will be announced later.
Paterson New Jersey August 9 six thousand silk and rayon workers strike for standardized wages in the industry The action led by the CIO textile workers organizing committee is part of a nationwide walkout involving more than 40000 silk workers and aims to pressure wage standardization.
Donald Horst an eight to ten month old boy, the subject of a custody dispute between two sets of claimants, was awarded temporarily to his foster parents Mr and Mrs Otto Horst by Judge E K Jarecki. The child had been with the Horsts from birth until the kidnapping and had been at St VIncent's orphanage since the real parents Lydia Nelson and John Regan turned him in.
Arthur EB Anderson of Washington was arraigned in Keokuk County district court on a statutory rape charge. He pled not guilty and bail was set at 5000 dollars. Trial is slated for the October term. he has denied the charges since arrest on July 22.
Mrs Martha Guest and Mr Ray along with Mrs Dora Stewart were in Muscatine yesterday for a birthday dinner honoring Miss Winifred Gieser.
Harmon Henry Brinning dies at his son Clarence Brinning's home after a period of illness. He was born May 17 1859 in Dutch Creek Township and leaves three children, nine grandchildren, and a half brother Charles Brinning. Funeral services will be at United Presbyterian Church with Dr. C A Owen and Rev Carl W Klein officiating.
Sheriff U M Putnam and Mrs Putnam discuss a spot lamp issue with a state road patrolman near Ainsworth Nebraska. The patrolman orders removal of the spotlight from the sheriff’s car, citing new regulations while the sheriff argues for official use. They part amicably after a brief exchange and an invitation to visit.
The Cambria, a British Imperial Airways flying boat, arrived in Foynes, Ireland, from Botwood Newfoundland in 12 hours and 2 minutes setting a new speed record for commercial North Atlantic crossings.
Six newborn girls are recorded at Washington county hospital with Janet Rae Robertson Barbara Jane Redlinger Donna Georgene Lin Carol Jean Astelmeyer Linda Anne Brindley and Susanne Belle Eliason among the newborns. The previous birth of a boy, Robert Harry Ward two weeks ago, completes the note.
A truck carrying 20 merry go round horses for a carnival wrecked on road No 161 north of Ainsworth. The driver escaped injury as the truck hit a highway flume and horses were injured but loaded into another vehicle and sent for repairs.
Miss Helen Hamilton of Newton spent the weekend with Miss Mary Welch and other friends in Washington, enjoying a brief trip and social gatherings.
