Miss Fern Parsons of Humboldt and Grover Forsythe of Spencer are to be married in public at the Clay county fair in Spencer in September. They were chosen from 20 couples.
Jack Marinelli a 21 year old national guard cavalryman was wounded at a target practice range when a bullet deflected by a target struck him. Doctors said his wounds are not serious.
A Manchester well drilled to supply the Castle theater cooling system is flowing at nearly 100 gallons per minute. The bore reached 235 feet after starting 20 feet beneath the surface and penetrating solid rock.
Ernest Sprague, 50, Ottumwa Powerboat Club member, suffered serious arm injuries when the flywheel of his outboard motor broke and threw parts in all directions. The flywheel punctured the gas tank but failed to ignite the fuel.
Theodore Myres 69 known as Pete lived alone and kept guns coins and a violin. He suffered fatal injuries in a shop fire in Des Moines prompting reports of $1600 in gold and a $2500 violin with a police guard stationed for a family search of valuables.
A missing Iowa City girl identified in Custer South Dakota as Florence Clark 18. The girl, who disappeared June 29, was recognized by a birthmark though she denied it. Her parents head to Custer to bring her home while under observation for mental deficiency.
Mount Ayr Nelson Hiatt aged 23 died at his home exactly 14 days after Rochester physicians sent him home by ambulance with the prognosis of two weeks to live. Heart disease was the cause of death.
Clarion farmer Fred Wilson, 62, died from injuries after being run over by a tractor July 23. He cranked the machine, did not know it was in gear, and lay helpless for two hours before help arrived.
A step brother and sister separated for 78 years were united after Le Roy Moomey of Iowa City read a Marengo feature about Mrs. John Gould. He recalled dates and names in the account and confirmed the sister’s identity, linking their long separation to an Iowa City newspaper story.
A Humboldt area farm story notes a mother cat that adopted a brood of small chickens but, after the chicks matured, deserted them. The animal’s maternal care was evident in its early attentiveness, though the brood’s cohesion did not endure into adulthood.
Miss Laurenza Hansen of Cedar Falls will receive seven thousand nine dollars from her mother Mrs Ka Hansen. The will dated 1932 names Laurenza as sole beneficiary as she remains unmarried per the provisions of the estate. The beneficiary is a student at an eastern university.
Howard Hughes, famed aviator and industrialist, begins a covert cross continental flight from Los Angeles at 3 05 am PST in a converted flying laboratory. The mission aims to circle the globe with a crew including a co pilot radio operator and mechanic aboard a plane carrying 1250 gallons of fuel.
Mrs Francis Swift died yesterday at her daughter’s home in Cedar Rapids after a long illness. A Rosary will be held tonight at 8 at L A Jones funeral home and the funeral will be tomorrow at 9 in St James church conducted by Rev H J Corcoran. Burial is in Elm Grove cemetery. The Swift family lived on a farm east of Washington for many years and were well known locally. A full obituary will follow.
In Clinton Iowa Aug 10 work on locks No 13 north of Fulton will be completed by November 1. The McCarthy Improvement Co Davenport is responsible for the project with 600 workers. After completion a roller dam will begin across the river reaching Eagle Point Park area. Lock gates are being installed by Milwaukee Bridge Co under a sub contract as weather and low water aid progress.
A land deed bearing Patrick Henry’s signature dated after the Revolutionary War is owned by Pat W. Longdale of Elgin. The document granted 1,000 acres of Virginia land to Longdale’s grandfather, with Henry as Virginia governor at execution. The land may now be part of Ohio and portions are printed while the rest is handwritten with a quill.
Actor Grant Withers condemns film industry cynicism, saying many veterans judge Hollywood by box office value and exploitation rather than art. He laments a focus on profits and market value over creative integrity and genuine storytelling.
John Waymack died yesterday at Abbott hospital in Oskaloosa after a year of illness. Born September 27, 1875 in Birmingham Alabama, he lived twenty years in Washington as a barber with real estate interests and later resided in Florence Alabama. Survived by Nellie L. Coates Waymack wife, daughters Mrs Phil Weldin and Mrs Paul Leech, a son Gaylord, four grandchildren, three brothers and a sister. Funeral Tuesday at 2:30 PM at L A Jones funeral home with Rev C W Klein. interment Elm Grove cemetery.
Paul Muller the 15 year old whose body was found hanging in a barn on Saturday remains the focus of police inquiry. Fingerprints verified as his own by John Wallace of Mason City while Alfonso Wright is held for the coroner to determine if the death was self inflicted. The boy was last seen after quarreling with his mother before chores for a friend.
Harry Miller of St. Louis has purchased the store at the N Central location and will take over in about two weeks. He is Ralph Pratt’s son in law and works in the sales department of a large St. Louis shoe company.
Mr and Mrs C F Clark of Iowa City returned their 18 year old daughter Florence who had been missing six weeks. The girl initially denied identity but a birthmark confirmed it. She was kept in a hospital for examination for possible nervous trouble. Florence was to have been married July 13. Her parents were distressed by her disappearance.
Miss Reita Willis is chosen to wear the crown of Miss West Chester 1936 and compete for the Iowa state title at Des Moines during the August 30 31 pageant. Some 200 delegates are expected, with the winner advancing to Miss Iowa 1936 and a possible trip to Atlantic City for Miss America.
Gov. Alf Landon delivered a greeting for the Centennial celebration in Council Bluffs praising Abraham Lincoln and the Union Pacific rail line as he linked westward pioneers to future progress. He highlighted a D A R monument to Lincoln and urged dedication to national responsibilities amid vast resources and global wealth.
Mr Win Smouse, ill for several days, is regarded as in a very serious condition at this writing. He appeared a little better yesterday morning and is in a semi conscious condition most of the time. He has made a valiant struggle.
Col Frank Knox Republican vice presidential nominee opens a campaign tour to 35 states with 70 speeches. He starts at a Columbia club lunch in Indianapolis, then Connersville, then Virginia Pennsylvania Maryland. He will address the United Retail Merchants association in Maryland on Aug 19 and spend a week in Manchester New Hampshire before New England and the Midwest.
Miss Dorothy Denison of Wellman visited friends here over the weekend, staying with local acquaintances and noting a pleasant end to her trip.
Leigh Sonle, general secretary of the Y M C A, is an ordained Methodist minister. In his senior year at Upper Iowa University he had charge of four churches: Ft. Atkinson, Calmar, Osling, Castalia.
Short funeral services for Mrs. James Morrow who died July 1 1936 in Encinitas California will be held at Elm Grove cemetery. The body was cremated and the ashes arrived at the Jones funeral home. Relatives meet at the funeral home at 4 PM to accompany the remains to the cemetery. She lived much of her life in Washington Iowa then moved west. She had nieces nephews and cousins here. Surviving sister Miss Myrtle Morrow lives in Chula Vista California. She was born September 1 1845 in Ohio and died almost 91. She lived in Spokane and with daughter Margery in Encinitas, also with son Roy in Syracuse Kansas. Married 1872 east of town. active church member.
Acting Postmaster General William Howes will speak in Davenport Iowa on August 22 Gov Clyde Herring announced today Howes took over duties while James A Farley is on leave to campaign The event highlights Howes public appearance in Iowa during the campaign period.
Myrtle died several years ago leaving survivors Margery Roy of Syracuse Kansas Dorothy and Inez Griffin. Also two grandchildren Paul and Lucille Morrow children of Roy and Mrs. Morrow and one sister Myrtle Palmer of California. She will be buried beside her husband and a daughter in Elm Grove cemetery.
Iowa Republican leaders plan to join Gov. Alf Landon on his August 21 tour across Iowa. Carl Cook says every route town requested extra stops. Notables listed include Sen. Lester Dickinson gubernatorial nominee George Wilson Harrison E Spanger Veral Moss Martha McClure and Veral Cook. Landon will speak briefly at Cedar Rapids.
AMES Iowa Aug 10 County agents in 43 Iowa growth area counties will appoint committees to aid an educational campaign to conserve livestock feed and seed. Director R K Bliss of the Extension Service said the committee will promote temporary silos hay and straw saving season seed for fall pastures seed corn and grains for 1937 and feeding emergency rations. The committees will work with county boards of directors and relief directors.
In Washington J Edgar Hoover discusses crime as a romanticized subject and argues that the filth and rottenness of crime being concealed has lured many young people from the straight path. He emphasizes the need to expose crime to deter youth.
Washington plans a Dollar Day on Thursday August 20 announced by the Chamber of Commerce special days committee. The event aims to set new value standards with merchandise priced at or below cost to attract thousands to the city trading area.
