Peter Thillen aged 44 in Waterloo scratched a mosquito bite on his elbow and nearly required amputation as infection spread through his system. He was hospitalized as doctors feared loss of his arm but his condition improved yesterday. Moral: don’t scratch back at mosquitoes.
A sympathetic reporter suggests a rain-bringing plan in Burlington urging a Sunday school picnic. The idea proposes the chamber of commerce coordinate with Key. Ving to promote a Baptist Sunday school picnic as a drought relief measure.
A large three story brick building dating to 1856 was demolished at Columbus Junction starting Wednesday. Built by Geo W Harrison and Smith McCarthy, it housed a general store and later professional offices. The Masonic lodge occupied upper rooms in 1857, and ownership changed to James and Frederick Colton in 1869. It later served as a garage and was owned by A C Sipe and then his daughter Mrs Harry Pratt.
Floyd Davis aged 19 of Waukee drowns in 45 feet of water after the rubber tube he rode deflates while he floated in a gravel pit near Van Meter. He could swim only a few strokes before sinking.
Four hundred dollars will be given Withers in the baby show at the coming state fair. The editor of the Richland Clarion predicts heavy winnings for Richland. In reality Richland would have slim odds if Washington county babies begin gooing at the judges.
An albino fawn and its albino mother roamed the Dupont range near Keokuk for months. W L Harvey and W L Hicks state game wardens captured the fawn Sunday with a net but the fawn died Sunday night during transport to Des Moines for safekeeping. The mother remains at large. officials believe heat and stress contributed to the death.
The Journal will be delivered to Washington county hospital patients each evening starting yesterday. The paper notes a patient has more time to read when ill and requests readers not to go to the hospital merely to obtain a free Journal.
Described as a relentless heat wave in the southern town area while northern Iowa enjoyed milder weather. Descriptions note Keokuk reaching 115 degrees and Ottumwa tying the Wednesday record, with Marshalltown and Alta posting lower highs. Rain in Iowa Falls and Waterloo offered some relief for northeast corn crops.
All Henry county Sunday school pupils will travel to Wayland on Friday August 17 for a county convention of Sunday school workers with Chaplain Rees from St Madison penitentiary as the main speaker. An all county chorus, band concert, games, and a basket dinner in Wayland west park are planned. The Methodist church will sell cold drinks and Roosevelt sandwiches for attendees.
Will Rogers humorist message failed to reach the Journal and other papers on schedule. It is believed Rogers crossed the international dateline during a trip aboard the Empress of Canada, causing him to lose a day Wednesday.
Regular concert each Sunday in Sunset Park through the season features Milburn A. McKay directing and Maurice Mayo as trombone soloist. The program includes marches, overtures, and popular tunes with remarks thanking Iowa State Champions of Municipal Bands 1924 and Fairfield guests.
A joint federal and state program to alleviate drouth damage in Iowa targets southern counties. Officials aim to feed cattle and hogs using northern corn, lift feeder pig restrictions for relief, and start daily cattle purchases. A 28 county survey will assess fodder use while relief labor cuts damaged corn on farms.
Norman A. Morris of Ames urged interest in roadside beauty at City Hall. He advocated natural scenery with grouped native trees and shrubs rather than straight lines and called for local organizations to push highway beautification with government funds available.
Arthur Edmondson says a Fairfield case alleging desertion was dropped and he was not bonded. He claims his wife, who lives near the town, agreed to pursue divorce instead and that he has been contributing toward her support.
A. W. Gerhardt a Wellman businessman who ran a five cent to a dollar store died in Cedar Rapids after three weeks of treatment from a heat attack. Funeral services are set for Moore funeral home in Cedar Rapids Saturday at two o'clock. He moved to Wellman from Adel and leaves a son Leslie of Cedar Rapids.
Edmondson is an employee of the American Pearl Button Company and one of the leading softball players of the community.
Winners announced at the 4 H club fair include health champions Esther Stitch and Doyle Jarrard, top livestock and clothing winners Eleanor Augustine and Martha Mathers, and grand champions Donald Marek Robert Flynn Robert Cross. Young health representatives Doyle Jarrard and Esther Smith will attend the Star Fair representing the county.
Martha Mathers, 19, daughter of K A Mathers of Haskins, won first in the 4-H club style show representing Washington County at the state fair. She topped over thirty-three contestants with top marks in twenty divisions and also won awards for wash dresses and hats and tams. Closest rival was Marjorie Frame of the Ambitious Hustlers.
Professor P B Shearer of Ames judged the county fair calves and praised the 4-H boys for high quality baby beeves and lambs. Leonard Marek won sweepstakes with Argus as grand champion while Lloyd Marek’s Angus was reserve. Judges lauded Washington county projects across baby beeves lambs colts and dairy heifers.
In Washington a large crowd witnessed a county 4-H parade around the square highlighting the clubs. Prizes were awarded for floats with first going to the Ferg Clift club, second to Wous sicket club of South Cedar, third to Northern Stars, and sixth to Peppy Linn Hollow club.
Crowds filled downtown streets for the whole club fair closing day as the parade led by the Washington Municipal band featured Martha Mathers statue and a grand line of livestock including grand champion Angus and Herefords. County 4-H clubs showcased floats amid colorful procession.
A 430 pound Angus calf named Buster, shown in the 4-H Club at the fair, choked on oil dressing and died about 2 30 PM. The calf weighed 915 pounds at the fair and had been valued around 70 dollars. A fundraiser was started among exhibitors and spectators to help the owner, Richard Week.
