Geo Quinlan, a trusted prisoner at Fort Madison, walked away from jail evading guards but was spotted by Mrs. Glenn Hayes, wife of Warden Haynes, near Weverla. She identified him and summoned officers who confirmed Quinlan's escape.
Ames city attorney A. B. Nichol was arrested for a traffic violation. In court he represented himself and secured a favorable outcome, receiving a $2 fine after his own successful defense.
Mrs. Charles Newton is hospitalized with a fractured leg after stepping on a watermelon seed and slipping in the Newton kitchen. The incident occurred as she fell to the floor while preparing or cleaning the area.
Two women and a man robbed an Elmo bank yesterday and fled toward Iowa. Authorities chased them to Clarinda and say they may head toward Washington. A blonde woman drove the car and smoked during the holdup. The note ends with a cheeky warning about Washington blondes smoking in cars.
Six farm buildings at the Nels Peterson farm north of Atlantic were destroyed by fire Friday. Losses ran into thousands of dollars but a bucket brigade saved the house. The piece urges Atlantic to seek rural fire protection and acquire a four truck fleet.
Osceola hosts its third rodeo this week as cowboys take hard bumps from rough riding and dust. Young Lester Hickman, sixteen, fell from a horse after four jumps. Ropers and bulldoggers struggle to break time records as steers circle the ring, entertaining about 1,000 daily spectators.
Washington DC receives an application from the Sioux City Journal publishers to establish a 20 watt experimental mobile radio station. The commission also logs a resubmitted application by Norman Braker of Muscatine to operate a See watt station.
Elmer Norton dug a well in Nashua Iowa 22 years ago and left a bottle of beer tied with a string. A local wag cut the string. This week Sherman Tupper had Kenneth Waren Warren clean the well and drink the bottle, calling it excellent.
Riverside batter hit a line drive that struck the center fielder on the head and bounced toward the left fielder who threw to third. The misplayed ball allowed a Riverside runner to stay close to the base as the crowd roared at the unusual exchange. The center fielder earned a nickname for the accident but remained in the game.
Three federal judges in Minneapolis denied petitions for temporary injunctions to restrain Governor Olson from enforcing martial law. The ruling allows National Guards to patrol city streets, aiming to reopen negotiations over the truck drivers' strike and safeguard residents and order.
Columbus Junction hosts kittenball games with the C. J. Tigers beating the Muscatine River Slingers 4 to 1 and the Columbus Junction Juniors defeating the Fredonia League 1 to 0, played Thursday evening at the fair grounds.

In Rock Rapids Aug 11 Roy Bowen and wife ponder naming their 25th child born Thursday Epilogue or Postscript. Last year the 14th child was Finis, and Bowen favored ending the chapter. Mrs Bowen prefers Epilogue with the nickname Eppy, as they await a final decision.
Creston Iowa residents under an 20 gallons per person daily limit face higher bills as relief funds ship water from Council Bluffs at 900 dollars a day. FRERA covers 10 cent per thousand gallon water cost plus shipping expenses. City weighs new rate schedules as a deep well option is studied.
County corn hog committee chair CC Patterson receives new rules from state secretary Ralph W. Smith on feeder pigs during the 1934 drought. The amendment to Administrative Rule No. 52 removes most restrictions on feeder pig purchases from August to November 1934 while requiring separation or identifiable marking and proof of death losses and sales when checked.
County Agent W J Rouda Bush praised the Washington fair noting exceptional cooperation from town residents, business people, clerks, and country visitors. He called the event one of the most successful 4 H club fairs and said the parade and county picnic highlighted a genuine bond between town and country that will endure.
Prizes for club floats were awarded with the Penn Cliff club taking first place. The Wous sicket club of South Cedar placed second, followed by the Northern Stars and Jackson girls tied for third. Jackson bows finished fifth and Peppy Linn Hollow club took sixth.
Townspeople and merchants crowded the show with cattle pens and live stock judging drawing sharp interest from Washington women and girls. The county agent notes many animals stayed in pens due to heat, some not led by boys, and that pies and sheep were absent from the parade. High ranking animals will go to the state fair opening August 22 and to the Davenport fair thereafter.

Washington may become the birthplace of a state turkey producers association with a meeting set for August 16. W M Vernon says a statewide organization may form here after a morning gathering at Sunset Park and demonstrations at the city hall. The event features lectures and motion pictures on turkey production and marketing, with Willman Wellman’s Arthur Gingerich highlighted as a leading local turkey man.
C Patterson, chairman of the Washington county corn hog committee, says federal checkers will arrive within days to inspect contracts as in other Iowa counties. Training for township committees on August 20 precedes a three week review before the second payments, with first payments likely to be issued soon.
Washington county voters approved a 16000 emergency tax levy for poor relief as ruled by state comptroller W Murtagh with Beatty Bennett law limits. Page and Marion counties also received emergency levies. County board noted increased relief costs and planned to add the levy to next year’s budget with September hearings. Mr and Mrs C A Galley and Cyrus Jr of Moline Ill are visiting Mrs Galley’s parents in town.
Mr Patterson believes actions will occur within a relatively short time after the contracts are checked and the reports transmitted to the state office at Des Moines. Approval is not expected to be long delayed.
Des Moines August 11 Up officials report ongoing checks of Iowa corn hog contracts for release from suspension of benefit payments. Leslie M Carl chairman of the Iowa corn hog board of review says thirty counties have been recommended for release and a survey of the remaining counties will be completed by August 18.
Des Moines records show a dramatic cool down from a peak of 94 degrees to 61 as a high pressure system from the north moves in. Scattered showers bring dust settled and vegetation refreshed while rainfall totals measure about a quarter inch across parts of Iowa.
The report notes sharply reduced corn, oats, rye, and barley production with a July downturn and heat wave effects. Corn prospects show 262 million bushels versus a 413 million average. oats 74 million, winter wheat 2.86 million, hay 2.194 million tons. Data from Leslie M. Carls office.
