Washington residents report hundreds of sparrows found dead under several large maples in Central Park after heavy rain overnight. Police found no signs of shooting or lightning damage. Rainfall reached 2.30 inches by 7 a.m., with heavy showers and lightning noted.
A terse note from WEJ addresses non-smokers in Greenfield Iowa urging that quitting smoking has improved health. The message playfully asserts readers must be breathing easier now that they are not smoking.
President Nixon proposes a sweeping reform that guarantees a minimum income to all willing to work, expands federal funds for cities and states, and ends incentives to stay home. By 1971 all four person families would qualify for 1600 a year with work or training, costing about four billion more than current welfare. At the base hospital drivers and orderlies will split into three eight hour shifts to gain experience with hospital patients while other personnel work with regular Army staff. United Press International reports Iowa will see clearing skies and cooler temperatures tonight with lows in the upper 50s to lower 60s. Sunday should stay sunny with highs in the lower to middle 80s. Rain chances are 19 percent tonight and five percent Sunday.
The Washington police department will shift to greater efficiency with several changes over the coming months. Fire truck drivers will run the police radio on eight hour shifts starting Saturday August 16, handling all radio traffic except vehicle dispatch. John Green will become assistant chief that same day as preparations begin for his 1970 succession to chief.
