DES MOINES The tax rate on Des Moines property will rise roughly $2.50 per $1,000 of assessed valuation next year. The increase reflects higher asks by most local government units and some reductions in property valuations.
Des Moines police records show eight men labeled the city’s most arrested. Over 19 years they accumulated 788 arrests, largely for intoxication, and remained regular customers through repeal and during later prohibition days.
Keith Marsh of Humboldt and Kansas City aviator met Douglas Corrigan at the San Diego exposition. Marsh then piloted his first solo flight in the airplane Corrigan crossed the Atlantic in last month, according to his parents.
A music leadership training school for rural chorus directors and township and county 4H music chairmen will be held in Ames on September 7 under Tolbert MacRae head of the Iowa State College music department. Seventy two directors attended last year’s first school and no fees were charged.

Iowa State College graduates in agriculture show 89 percent placement with 96 of 109 men employed. R. M. Visquam, head of agricultural personnel, notes openings rising in the last two weeks and a shortage in vocational education and smaller gaps in agronomy and agricultural economics.
John F. Spreatt resigns as Iowa City sewage plant chief to join the Public Works Administration in Omaha Nebraska. He will assume the engineering division post August 8 after serving as superintendent since February 1936.
Mrs 8S. J. Statter and daughter Hazel return from a weeklong vacation visiting the Wisconsin Delta and the Black Hills. On the return trip Miss Statler called on three college friends in Hartley Glidden and Scranton Iowa.
Private Dale Voorhees reports Troop F in Newton Iowa enduring heavy rainfall while on guard duty. Troops slept crowded in tents soaked by four hours of rain, with dry blankets from Camp Dodge. Morale remains steady as they await camp time and possible return plans.

Mrs. Fred Kephart of southeast of town coordinates the Washington county agricultural display for the state fair. The 12 by 16 foot exhibit will feature more than forty pans of grains apples plums pumpkins squashes potatoes and other county produce. Fires raged across a Manila district and San Pablo town, affecting over 1,000 families and causing extensive property loss. Jean Bostwick granddaughter of Mr and Mrs B F Bostwick sr sustained a spine injury in a Waupaca Wisconsin crash while driving her father's car toward a Girl Scout camp. She will wear a cast for three months and stay in a hospital six months.

A barn eight miles southwest of town on the Commercial Say ings bank trusteeship dairy farm owned by Charles Marek burned around 3 30 Sunday morning. Hay and straw fed the blaze while Farmers Mutual fire truck helped save adjacent buildings. Loss included hay harnesses a wagon and a damaged corn crib with insurance through the Washington County Farmers Mutual Insurance association.
