Darla Millspaugh aged 17, sister of the 1983 national 4-H girls health champion, won the Henry county 4-H girls health contest in Mount Pleasant. She will represent the county at the state fair.
A petition from businessmen asks Boone City Council to prohibit peddling in the business district. The city now regulates but does not bar peddling. Petitioners seek an opinion from City Attorney F. L. Mackey and plan to request an attorney general ruling on a banning ordinance.
Des Moines railway investigators uncovered four months of operation by plainclothes officers. Officials seized three types of counterfeit passes used to obtain free street car rides from patrons.
Fred Lee a 22 year old Black man rescued eight year old Garwin Poffenberger from a 30 foot sandpit lake at Fisher's lake. Poffenberger had been under water for three minutes before Lee dived in to bring him to safety. Earlier Lee saved another unnamed boy.
A 1-year-old man, Charles B. Johnson, wandered 10 miles across Des Moines streets for about 1060 hours before firefighters found him. Johnson, a retired painter, lived with his son in law Carl Reeves. He left home after breakfast to walk, grew confused, and kept walking hoping to regain his bearings.
Willard Frampton of Boone claims the state’s largest strawstack with dimensions 140 feet by 40 feet by 8 feet, built from 115 acres yielding about 6 500 bushels.
Wilbur Rothar of New York, former seaman, faces extortion charges over an alleged plan to shake down George Putnam husband of Amelia Harbart Putnam. He claimed the missing aviatrix was aboard his ship and demanded 2000 dollars. Federal checks proved the tale a fabrication.
Moses Bilison Hall born a slave in Nashville Tennessee in 1857 died at the county hospital aged eighty. He worked as a barber with George Black Fred Motts and Jim Redd in Washington and is survived by his daughter Myrtle Rhodes four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services are set for Sunday at Sherman’s funeral home.
Stella Crater travels from Belgrade Lakes to Maine after seven years seeking a court declaration of death for her husband Justice Joseph Force Crater. Under the Enoch Arden law she could remarry and claim his estate. Disappearance sparked a massive police hunt after Crater cashed $5,000 in checks, packed files, and vanished near Broadway.
In St Paul August 7 the disaster area centers on six counties blighted by past droughts and now hit by floods. Homes lost and residents seek state and federal aid as 20 inches of rain fall in two weeks. Dust storms last year contrast with the current deluge that overwhelms ditches and drainage.
Veda Amberg and Dick Purcell of Warner Bros are badly cut after a head on collision in Hollywood. Mrs. Henry A Russell in the other car suffers critical injuries while her husband escapes with minor injuries. Nearby, Howard B Dorsey and Marion G Lounebau gh die in a Lake View Point cliff plunge near Big Bear California.
Miss Eliza Bain 90 native of Columbus City died in Des Moines yesterday after a fall. Funeral services will be held in Des Moines, burial Sunday at 1 30 p.m. in Columbus City cemetery with a brief grave service by Rev W A Bloom. Friends in Des Moines will accompany the body. She had lived with the Overholt and Smith families and moved to Des Moines in 1898. She was a member of the Christian church and had no surviving relatives.
Charley McCambell of Keota buys the 169 acre D. Carris estate farm west of Washington. H. T. Carrs and family have lived on the property for years. The land sold for 97 dollars an acre.
James Lemley suffered a fractured hip and minor bruises after a mower ran away yesterday. He was found by Clarence Lynn and taken to Washington county hospital, then returned to the Tom Carris home where he will stay eight to ten weeks. He is the son of Mrs. J. F. Lemley and resides with the Carris family.
Mr and Mrs Charles Friese of north town are parents to a baby girl born this morning at their home. The infant weighs seven and a half pounds and will be named Joan Marie.
A two day old baby snatched from its dead mother survived after a post mortem Caesarean birth in Philadelphia. Medical officials compared the case to Julius Caesar, noting the procedure is rising only in last decades and depends on the mother dying or near death and rapid action within minutes.
The marriage license business shows a pronounced slump after June a year ago and July's modest activity. The clerk of court records reveal no licenses granted at the courthouse this month, ending a period of previous higher activity.
The Washington County Cow Testing association schedules a picnic on August 11 at Wellman. Washington reports Japan and China speeding toward a possible North China conflict with large scale purchases of American war materiel. China quietly bought planes guns and ammunition for about half a million dollars monthly, totaling over 19.9 million in the last year. In the past month China spent 309,870 and Japan 203,770 on war materials in the United States.
Improvements to the State theater continue under Manager Ralph Pratt with a major effort to modernize the building. This week new display cabinets for attractions were installed at the entrance, front adornments updated, and doors repainted. The front was refreshed in deep green and red, and the east wall is being painted by Ralph Dougherty's painting team.
A curious visitor known as Santa Claus, real name Conrad Coon Reichley, arrives from Logan Ohio to Cottonwood Iowa to visit his sister Ethel Sherman and brother Grant Reichley. His long white whiskers date before Roosevelt’s first term. he vows to keep them until Republicans regain power. He is described as a farmer at heart and is 73% years old.
DES MOINES three Indianola youths were held by police for investigation after Violet Hirschman of Des Moines jumped from a moving car returning from a dance. Hirschman suffered a fractured skull and was reported in critical condition.
