Swartzendruber Sues Graber for Alienation of Affection

Donnie K. Swartzendruber of Washington filed a $75,000 alienation of affection suit in district court against Crawfordsville's Peter Graber Jr. The complaint seeks $50,000 in ordinary damages and $25,000 in punitive damages for Graber allegedly alienating Swartzendruber's wife, Florence Joan, since June 1969. The Swartzendruber marriage ended on May 9, 1972.

Heavy rain, hail lash county with scattered crop damage

Heavy showers hit the county Saturday night with hail causing severe damage on part of the Joe Jones farm and farms east of there. Rain totals ranged from 2.6 inches in Washington to near 4 inches in northern farmers’ gauges, with record or near record low temperatures across six cities. The National Weather Service notes a cooling spell ending soon and a warming trend approaching.

Rabies cases rise in Iowa as skunk carriers grow

Ames reports from ISU extension vet John Herrick show 200 rabies cases in 1972, up from 134 a year earlier. Skunks, 10 to 20 percent rabid of about 100,000 in the state, drive infections to cattle, cats, swine, dogs, sheep and horses. Officials warn of potential localized epidemics if steps aren’t taken.

Missouri 4-H group visits Cape Girardeau County homes

Fifteen Missouri 4-H members from Cape Girardeau County visit in Washington and Johnson County homes August 7 to 13 led by Julia Gamon. Rain and flood risk hit eastern Iowa as storms lash state
