Federal grand jury indicts six Iowa firms on pollution and mislabeling charges

A Des Moines grand jury indicted Economy Products, Triple F Feeds, Clarence Board and Sons, Harper Brush Works, Earl May Garden Center, and Midwest International on 51 counts. Charges include polluting streams mislabeling products and shipping economic poisons without EPA approval. Potential fines range from 1,500 to 15,000 dollars per count.

Slayings in Barrington Hills House Shock Chicago Suburb

Four people killed in a Barrington Hills home including Paul M. Corbett 67, a Johnson & Higgins executive, and his wife Marian. The victims, two women and a man, were found in the kitchen with a dachshund slain nearby. Police pursued robbers and a stolen blue panel truck after the Friday night killings.

Budget increase to raise county taxes in 1973

Washington County proposes a 1973 budget of 3,268,848 a rise of 898,865 over 1972. About 97,883 of the increase would come from additional property levies with a 1.89 mill hike for incorporated areas and a 2.18 mill rise for townships. A public hearing is set for 10 a.m. Friday Aug 11 at the courthouse.

Muskie declines McGovern vice presidential offer

Edmund S. Muskie rejected George S. McGovern s invitation to be his running mate after weighing the offer at his Kennebunkport summer home. A spokesman said Muskie declined to run and would not discuss further details, leaving McGovern to seek a replacement for Eagleton as D N C officials prepare to meet in Washington to confirm a new candidate.

Water Pipe Break Triggers Alarm At Chance Home

Washington firemen were called to the Duane G. Chance residence at 507 South Ave. C after a water pipe near a clothes washer ruptured. Steam and alarm prompted the visit, but no fire was found. The incident was reported by local fire crews.
