Des Moines reports that five year operative program students may join the Navy V-1 program in Iowa. Lieut. Truman Jones said enrollment is open to those in their second or third year. V-1 had limited entrants who would finish college within four years from freshman enrollment.
Grinnell college drama chief Mrs. Sara Sherman Pryor, 62, died after a heart attack suffered ten days earlier. Former head of speech and drama at Valley City Teachers College in North Carolina and Central High School in Bridgeport, Conn. Survived by son William of Washington, D. C., Grinnell graduate in 1933.
Des Moines Sioux City Davenport Waterloo and Cedar Rapids housewives are asked to save tin. Tin, called the neglected stepchild of the metal family, is a wartime need and the chief supply source now comes from American kitchens. Mayors will plan collection methods and timing later.
Gen. MacArthur reports Japanese forces have occupied Kai and Aroe islands in the Arafura sea, 225 miles from Australia, closing critical invasion routes and forming a 4000 mile crescent around northern Australia. The move increases invasion points and aerial bases, intensifying bombings of the mainland.
Ralph Dugdale, 15, son of Mr and Mrs Charles Dugdale of Blencoe, drowned in Gard Lake two miles south of here while attempting a quarter mile swim. His body was recovered several hours later despite revival efforts. Playmate Ronald Dean, 9, was with him and alerted a passerby who notified officials.
Fire blamed on spontaneous combustion in oily rags injured two people and caused seven thousand dollars damage to two stores in Marshalltown. A. Rockholz, 61, manager of the Marshall hardware store, and Mrs. Pearl Cooper, 53, who lived in apartments, were seriously hurt after leaping from second story windows and taken to Deaconess hospital. Stocks of the hardware and the Karl EB. May seed store were heavily damaged on the first floor.
District Judge FI C Davidson granted a temporary injunction restraining the Order of Railway Telegraphers and the Rock Island railroad from transferring Mary V. McGinn from the Iowa division to the Cedar Rapids division. The petition says McGinn plans to transfer seniority rights earned in Iowa, contrary to the order’s rules and procedure.
Richard Leet announces the Leet Market will reopen Saturday after a fire two weeks ago. Damage was confined to the rear, renovations and redecorations are complete, essential equipment survived, and remaining stock has been sold.
Lieutenant Richard Hageman stationed at Edgewood Arsenal Maryland is due home for a six day leave at the start of the week with Mrs Hageman. They will visit the Dave Wallingford R J Cattlett home.
Washington County Farm Bureau schedules a picnic on Thursday August 20 in Sunset park to coincide with the final day of the 4 H club achievement show in Washington. Speaker will be Mrs Raymond Sayre of Ackworth Iowa national farm bureau leader who has attended White House conferences. The program includes winners from the 4 H achievement show music and a champion girls demonstration team.
Representative Thomas Martin visiting Aberdeen Proving Ground reports American arms production is astounding in quantity and quality. He notes demonstrations of small arms and larger weapons, and criticizes Axis weapons claims as ludicrous. He cites firsthand tests by committee members.
War production chief Donald M. Nelson announced the WPB approved Henry J. Kaiser’s plan to build 600 70-ton cargo planes. Initial output 100 aircraft with 400 more if successful, modeled after the navy flying boat Mars by Glen L. Martin. Construction rotation and impact on combat planes to be considered.

Washington recorded the warmest day of the week with a high of 92 degrees. Mrs. George Kerr and her two sons Donald and Roderick left last night on the Rocket from Columbus Junction to Oakdale Illinois to visit relatives. Rev Kerr will join them later.
Washington church marked 100 years since the 1842 outdoor communion in a elm grove. Rev. George Kerr led an outdoor service on West Jefferson Street with 207 attendees and token admission, echoing the psalmic text Thou preparest a table.
Superintedent E A Ralston received a card from Lucy Stahl Washington high school chemistry teacher stating she declined the Buena Vista college position at Storm Lake and will return to resume work when Washington schools reopen August 31. Storm Lake papers wrongly reported she accepted.

A severe hailstorm struck Olds and nearby countryside around 9 30 last night causing extensive damage. The storm covered five miles east and west and two miles north and south including Olds, breaking windows in stores along the Main Street east side.
Report says hail damaged Owens cafe Peterson grocery and Anderson hardware in Olds. West windows broken in about 26 residences, church and school roofs damaged, gardens stripped. Crops near Olds extensively damaged with some large farms nearly ruined. Hail stones up to nine inches in circumference.
Senate sponsors of an enlarged synthetic rubber from grain program say they will not push to override President Roosevelt's veto unless his new three man committee reports back. Senator Guy M. Gillette of Iowa asserts Congress would vote to override when it reconvenes in September if the issue is presented.

In India, Gandhi's nationwide passive resistance gains momentum while Japan extends bases off northern Australia. The Kretskaya region near Stalingrad holds as German breakthroughs continue elsewhere.
Frank L Eagle 61 of East Pleasant Plain died at 9 10 PM in Washington county hospital after a lingering illness. Funeral at St Joseph Catholic church East Pleasant Plain Saturday at nine with Rev Paul Wetzstein. burial Holy Trinity Richmond. Rosary at home tonight. Survived by wife Gertrude Lintz Eagle and four children plus step mother and many relatives. Burial and funeral handled by Sherman’s funeral home.
