Column notes Iowa candidates at Fort Des Moines receive their first army payday. The 444 officer candidates who began training July 20 were paid half a month’s pay Friday totaling 2200 dollars or 25 dollars per officer candidate. Some celebrated by visiting the post exchange for a movie and soda.
Detasseling of Pioneer seed corn near Washington County nears completion with 140 workers across ten farms totaling 535 acres. John Patterson leads local operations for Pioneer Seed Corn Company under R J Poindexter of Des Moines, with harvest slated for Sept 20 at Durant and Marengo processing plants.
Des Moines Cass County faced a swift rebuttal in Iowa scrap metal efforts. Lawrence Brennan, chairman of Palo Alto salvage committee, said Cass County cannot match Alto Alto County in the campaign. Cass officials boasted their per capita collection plans, aiming to lead the state.
President Virgil M. Hancher announced that substantial notes were allotted to the state University of Iowa for the enlistment of students next month into the Army Enlisted Reserve Corps. The plan aims to create a pool of manpower for officer candidates while students remain in school.
Vinton farmer William Harrison suffered serious injuries when an empty wagon upset on him. He was buried under the wagon in an oats field and pulled out unconscious. His hospital condition Friday was listed as fair.
Hawarden 16 year old Robert Jones, son of Mr and Mrs Casey Jones, died in an auto wreck twelve miles north west of Hawarden South Dakota. The vehicle driven by Que Haines Jr of Hawarden swerved after a blowout and rolled several times.
Harold Theodore Shelley, 22, of Linden, was held to the federal grand jury under a $3,000 bond after arraignment before U.S. Commissioner W. A. Sigler on charges of refusing to report for induction. Shelley, a Jehovah's Witness, was arrested at Redfield by U.S. Marshal James J. Gillespie and will be taken to Ottumwa jail for grand jury action.
DENISON workers at the Armour & Co egg drying plant voted for the Packinghouse Workers Organizing Committee as their official bargaining representative in a National Labor Relations Board conducted election.
The district announces junior college enrollment now ongoing with classes starting August 31, same day as high schools. Prospective students should contact the high school office to see registrar Althea Montgomery or principal W A Erbe. Clyde Owen named junior college coach with full curricula and activities. NYA job openings and clerical help available. armed forces reserve enlistment possible for eligible young men.
Office of Price Administration officials in Washington prepared universal ration books to cover all rationing programs that might be enacted in the coming year. The books would be distributed to every civilian and kept ready so a rationing program could be put into effect almost overnight.
The union vote carried 129 in favor and 8 against, reflecting clear backing from the campus community. Details show broad participation and a decisive outcome in favor of organizing.
James Alfred Conners 59 former night clerk at Hotel Grand on North Marion Avenue died suddenly of a heart attack on the third floor of the Home hotel on South Marion. He was to be manager of the redecorated Home hotel. Funeral services will be held Sunday in Clinton Illinois with burial in Rock Creek cemetery DeWitt county. Surviving are his mother Martha Conners a brother Frank and four sisters J A Arthington Paul Sears John Schmidt and Josie Johnson all of DeWitt county Illinois.
The All-India Congress working committee overwhelmingly backed Gandhi's call for mass passive resistance, with 13 opposed. Gandhi said the campaign would begin only after talks with the British viceroy, and Nehru helped introduce the resolution yesterday.
The eight war wreckers who arrived by Uboat were tried by a military commission. Six were executed by electric chair at the District of Columbia jail starting at noon. Ernest Burger and George Dasch had their death sentences commuted to life and 30 years hard labor respectively. The two others who aided the U.S. were spared. The condemned were Herbert Hans Haupt Edward Kerling Heinrich Heink Richard Quirin Werner Thiel Hermann Neaubauer.
The county employment service office near Nicola and Harmon book store will close for ten days starting Monday morning. Mrs. Albert Lay, in charge, will take a vacation for that period.
Frank Casey and his children Jane and Bill returned home yesterday from Fort Oglethorpe Georgia after visiting Mr Casey's brother Sergeant James Casey.
The county rationing office announced a final chance next week for late applicants to receive extra sugar for canning. Office hours remain 8 am to 12 pm and 1 pm to 4 pm with Saturdays excluded. Between July 1 and August 7, 2,330 applications were received and only two denied, with 918 sugar rationing books issued.
At Fort Leavenworth Holla Hesseltine of Washington Iowa leaves the reception center with a barracks bag containing over 89 dollars of military clothing. He will receive a few days of preliminary instruction before transfer to a replacement training center for eight weeks of intensive basic training in his assigned branch.
Instructions from the state draft board require occupational questionnaires for men in the fifth registration aged 18 to 20. In Washington county 356 youths will receive them unless already enlisted or inducted. Questionnaires will be mailed as soon as workload allows to complete the countywide dispatch.
The report notes 749 certificates for canning sugar issued and 236 books given out. It cites over 140000 pounds allotted for canning, with 82000 pounds in the first three weeks. Second period allotments matched the first, May 21 to June 30, when extra sugar for early fruits was allowed, and more ration books were issued.
