Fair livestock sale nets $98 623 at county fair auction
Washington County 4-H and FFA youth earned receipts of 98 623 from the annual county fair auction. 188 head of cattle 92 sheep and a champion pen of eight junior feeder calves owned by Jeff Bowen of Keota were sold. Top beef price paid was 75 cwt by Wellman Community Club for Denise Bohr's grand champion steer. Lamb pens brought 65 and 61 cwt with a reserve pen owned by Joey Patterson selling at 57 cwt. Average market beef weight rose to 1 088 pounds and price to 43 97 cwt. Lamb averages held at 106 pounds and 57 80 cwt. Numerous buyers from feed stores banks and local firms participated.

Indianola man named executive director of Iowa ASCS
UPI reports U S Agriculture Secretary Bob Bergland appointed Kenneth Hatcher 51 as executive director of the Iowa Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service. Hatcher has been office manager trainee since 1957 and county executive director in Ringgold and Warren counties. He ran a purebred livestock farm from 1951 to 1961.
Phone strike near as Bell talks progress
Negotiators for the Bell System and about 700,000 workers moved toward a wage settlement that could avert a nationwide telephone strike at midnight. A federal mediator met with both sides through the night. The company reported an improved offer after unions rejected it Friday and sources said there had been some movement on both sides with expectation of further improvement.

Ozark Air Lines union votes to accept contract
Ozark Air Lines mechanics union members approved the company’s contract offer in a vote from St. Louis and Chicago, rejecting union leadership’s push to reject. Spokesman John Miller said ballots from out-state areas will not change the majority and a strike was averted. The agreement ends the dispute over a contract that expired Oct. 1 after negotiations began in June 1976.
