The Riverside firm drains and deepens Marr Park pond to about 12 feet by removing years of silt from the bottom. Iowa State Fisheries will restock when water returns, though rain shortages may delay refilling until next spring or after snowfall.
Cyclists from the Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa are due in Washington Friday morning. The Washington County Fairgrounds will host vendors and activities including ice water from the retail bureau and fresh food from local groups. The event, begun in 1973, draws thousands and features a bike lane on West Madison Street for safety.
The forecast calls for clear to partly cloudy skies and cool air tonight with lows in the 50s to mid 60s, mainly in the northeast to west regions. Thursday brings partly cloudy skies and warmer temperatures with highs in the 80s, near 90 in the west, with a chance of showers and thundershowers late tonight or Thursday across the western areas.

A Clear Lake couple sold 2,100 acres of Iowa farmland to four West German couples, descendants of royalty, for almost 3.5 million dollars. The land in Prairie and Laverne townships in southeastern Kossuth County went for 1 625 dollars per acre, totaling the purchase price.
Mrs Veil (Myra B) Davisson, 46, of Wellman, is named permanent postmistress at the Wellman post office effective Aug 2. The Cedar Rapids post office chief announced the appointment after Davisson had served as acting postmistress since Rex Severt retired last year. A long time Wellman resident, she attends the Wellman Methodist Church and the Order of Eastern Star. She is mother to three sons: Raymond Davisson in the Air Force in Spain, Dennis Davison of Longmont Colorado, and Keith Davisson of Iowa City. Davisson has completed a correspondence course in second class westmaster training.
About 4000 cyclists start the fourth day of the Register's Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa in Boone. The cross state tour, sponsored by the Des Moines Register, will stop in Newton Sigourney Mount Pleasant and Fort Madison before ending at the Mississippi River. Riders traveled from Lake View after a stop with 1500 free ham sandwiches provided by Lake City Chamber of Commerce.
Washington City Council in a special session reversed Monday’s move to delay water main and storm sewer improvements. Weber Bros. of Mechanicsville will perform the work with bids: water mains 49,914 and storm sewers 59,079. Begin within a week.
President Ford and Japanese Prime Minister Takeo Miki reaffirmed U S defense commitments to Japan under the 1960 treaty and vowed to monitor North Korea and South Korea tensions. They urged peaceful dialogue for Korean unification and UN armistice stability, noting the Hiroshima anniversary.
City water superintendent Marvin Glandon announced a shutdown for the segment of South Marion Avenue from Madison to Harrisonstreets starting 7 a.m. Thursday to install new valves. Service is expected to be off for at least four hours.
