Six juvenile offenders admit using black spray paint on a wall at the K C building in Washington. They were taken into custody by local officers and will be assigned to clean the wall as restitution.
Washington County Fair crowds gather for a big tractor pull as Cyclones dominate 4-H and FFA market pig awards. Winners include Mike Owens and Eddie Anderson with top pig and champion pen, plus Eric Graber as swine showman. Dairy, sheep showmanship titles also awarded. Wednesday features events and a pork barbecue.
The Ainsworth Lions Club will sponsor a class A horse and pony show at the Washington County Fairgrounds Sunday August 11 at 1 pm. Twenty two classes offer 660 dollars in total prize money with riders from nearby towns and states expected to compete. Raymond Bonar is ringmaster Chuck Bach from Ankeny will judge Judy Wolf from Keota is organist. Co chairs are Bob Gerot and Jim Wilson Proceeds support Lions Club local service projects and the Lions Light Conservation program for the blind.

Three balloons snagged in power lines during the Hare and Hound event at the National Hot Air Balloon Championships in Indianola. Don Cline, 36, of Greensboro NC, escaped after his gondola touched lines and fabric burned, with only minor cloth damage. Two others, Joel Katleman and Kingswood Sprott, remained in wires until freed. no injuries were reported.

The panel also discussed selecting a new police chief as Chief Cherry nears retirement and approved Blair House demolition plans with a wary vote and requests for a written financial plan.
An explosion at the Pan American World Airlines terminal of Los Angeles International Airport killed at least two people and critically injured five or six others. The blast occurred around 8 15 a m near a coin operated locker by the ticket office. Firefighters and police evacuated the terminal within 15 minutes and emergency teams were sent to the scene.
