McGovern and Muskie hold private session on running mate

Democratic nominee George S. McGovern and Sen. Edmund S. Muskie met for two hours at Muskie's home to discuss filling the vacant vice presidential spot after Eagleton's withdrawal. McGovern said he would consult Muskie before deciding, while Muskie stayed at his home with aides and issued no new statement.

Firefighting force closes gap around Big Sur blaze

A 1000-man hand tool army moved to seal a two mile gap around the Big Sur forest fire threatening a 100,000 acre wilderness south of Carmel. The blaze was 70 percent encircled and officials predicted containment by nightfall if weather stayed favorable. In two days the fire consumed 4,100 acres of watershed in the scenic coastal region.

Fischer Wins 10th Game Advances Toward World Title

In Reykjavik Bobby Fischer defeated Boris Spassky as Spassky resigned on move 56 in the resumed 10th game, giving Fischer a three point lead toward becoming America’s first world chess champion.

Algeria frees five air pirates in Delta ransom case

Five black militants hijacked a Delta Airlines jet to Algiers after receiving 1 million dollars in ransom and were released by Algeria while the Black Panthers demand the money be given to them. An official said the money is under seal and the hijackers were held incommunicado. In Saigon, officials say hundreds of South Vietnamese officials were executed during the three month Communist occupation in the coastal highlands, with survivors recounting harsh rule and arrests.

Ray and Franzenburg to debate in Des Moines

UPI reports Governor Hebert Ray will debate Democratic rival Paul Franzenburg. The Iowa Press Association will sift debate opportunities, with the governor aiming to fit as many as possible into his schedule. A firm date exists for September 10 before editors and publishers in Des Moines.

Food prices soar as July wholesale index climbs

Washington reports July wholesale farm product prices rose 3.2 percent the sharpest in 17 months lifting the year-to-year gain to 12.9 percent. Meat eggs fruits and vegetables led the jump with live poultry up 15.1 percent and egg prices up 11.2 percent. Unemployment held at 5.5 percent with total employment at 81.7 million and weekly earnings rising to 136.7 dollars.
