Washington County 4-H fair closes with livestock sale and horse show
Brisk bidding marked this morning’s market livestock sale at the Washington County fair with an average of 28.22 per cwt. Grand champion baby beef Don Rinner sold to Hy Vee for 0.47 per lb totaling 420.65 while reserve champion Cathy Horn sold to Washington Livestock Sales for 0.50 per lb totaling 485. Tonight’s horse show at 7 p.m. in the fair arena caps the event followed by a skating rink program at 9 p.m. A Kid show by the Kiwanis at 2 p.m. featured free admission and a watermelon feed.

Results from the Washington County Fair grounds show winners in multiple weight classes. In the 5500 pound class Ken Kucera of Riverside took first, with Jack Simons of West Liberty second and Marvin Sieren of Keota third, Dick Stewart of West Chester fifth. The 7000 pound class crowned Jerry Greiner of Keota first and Ron Bowser of West Chester second, Roy Meeks of Cedar Rapids third, with Jack Simons of West Liberty fourth. In the 9000 pound class Ron Bowser of West Chester won, Ken Weiland of Riverside was second, Jerry Greiner of Keota third, and Larry Griggs of Washington fourth. Judging Complete At Washington County Fair Exhibits
Judging of girls exhibits at the Washington County Fair finished Wednesday and all exhibits were released this morning. Demonstration teams finished their competition and selections for the State Fair closed the girls clubs activities. Results list a long set of winners across WPurple Blue and Red ribbons in wardrobe, textile and clothing, senior 4-H, formal wear, dress for best wear, school dress, and play clothes with numerous named participants.

Iowa Archaeologists Urge Rebuilding Ancient Cherokee Village
State Archeologist Marshall B. McKusick urged reconstructing a major portion of a prehistoric Indian village found near Cherokee by a University of Iowa team. The five acre preserve would need enlarging for camping and recreation and the project could cost 15000 to 20000 dollars. The site housed 100 to 150 inhabitants in 10 to 14 homes, ringed by a pole wall with a moat and a possible watchtower on a knoll. The reconstruction aims to show how Iowa agriculturalists lived 600 years ago, with most houses and layout already understood.
