A U S Air Force B57 Canberra crashed in Nha Trang after Viet Cong fire, killing 12 Vietnamese and injuring 12, eight Americans. The two-man crew parachuted into the bay. attempts were made to shoot the aircraft down as it veered toward the sea. Two American fire crew members were among the injured. The incident comes amid a string of air mishaps as U S forces consolidate operations in Viet Nam. Grace Hoffman of Brighton died at 83, with funeral set in Brighton. She was born in 1882 in Page County Iowa and lived most of her life in North Dakota before moving to Brighton.

Chris Rinner's grand champion pony and Pepper Smith's grand champion horse led the Washington County Fair Horse and Pony division. Pony reserve champs went to Kathy Freese. Peggy Kephart earned reserve champion horse. Trail Performance champ was John Lance for Washington Hustlers. Pepper Smith claimed Showmanship. Numerous blue, red, and white ribbons noted for ponies and horses across foals, yearlings, and two year olds with numerous handlers.

Two Cars Damaged In North Second Avenue Collision
Police report two cars were damaged in a Thursday afternoon collision on North Second Avenue during a brief rain shower. Delmar Richard Yoder of Washington drove the northbound car turning west into an alley, causing $250 front right damage. Dale Paul Samuelson of Route 2 Oskaloosa headed south suffered $1,000 front end damage. Yoder sustained rib bruises and Samuelson head and arm bumps. Yoder was charged with failure to yield the right of way.

In Hiroshima at 8 15 a m local time 20 years after the first atomic bomb disaster residents paused as traffic halted and 500 000 people observed a minute of silence for 78 000 victims. A crowd of over 30 000 gathered at the curved flametopped memorial where Mayor Shinzo Hamai opened a memorial vault and added a book listing 469 victims identified in the past year. The list includes 69 who died from radiation aftereffects, part of the vault’s growing total of 61 443 identified victims.

Record crowd fills annual Washington Saddle Club Horse Show
A near capacity crowd attended the Washington Saddle Club Horse Show at the fairgrounds on Thursday evening. Washington High School graduate injured in Cedar Rapids crash
Charlotte Wulf, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Wulf, a 1963 Washington High School graduate, suffered facial and knee lacerations and chest and abdominal injuries Friday at 7:40 am in a two-vehicle crash one mile south of Cedar Rapids on Highway 149. She is at St Luke's Hospital Cedar Rapids. The Iowa Highway Patrol said her car collided with another vehicle whose driver was killed.
