Hughes to help select Eagleton successor on national panel
Des Moines reports Sen Harold E Hughes will represent Senate Democrats on the enlarged National Committee in Washington next week. He will vote on a Wednesday ruling by chairman Jean Westwood allowing all 303 committee members a voice in choosing the new vice presidential candidate, after Westwood overturned counsel Joseph Califano's earlier decision. Hughes won the right to sit on the committee in a closed Senate Democrats caucus, nominated by Sen John Tunney and elected unanimoously.

Young burglars foiled at Glover's Laundromat
Two Washington youths aged 15 and 16 were arrested by police and a night watchman at 2 45 am for attempting to force open a vending machine at Glover's Laundromat. The door was partly opened before officers arrived and detained the pair. Charges will be filed with county juvenile authorities. The Miss Washington County Pageant was rescheduled for next Tuesday at 8 pm with season tickets honored. admission without a season pass is 1 50 and Kiwanis food stand will be open.
