Two horses on the Joe Havel farm near West Des Moines died after falling into an abandoned well. The incident occurred about two and a half miles south of the city.
Burlington gears up to host about 1000 members of the Iowa department American Legion Auxiliary for its nineteenth annual convention August 9 10 11.
Newton witnesses a charivari in honor of Police Chief L. A. McCall celebrating his marriage to Iva Lucille Wright. The event involved a mock mob procession through the town Square organized by officers and townspeople.
Des Moines State Safety Commissioner Karl Fischer urged applicants not to write him about delays. He said licenses are mailed as fast as possible with 400,000 already dispatched out of 1,200,000 applicants.
A Creston man calling himself C. A. Craig posed as a paint salesman and rented a house, then carried his fraud to Des Moines. He passed checks at a local bank for collection totaling 205 dollars, ordering furniture from Des Moines firms to be delivered to Creston and taking small change.
The Washington Municipal Band travels to Sigourney for a guest concert at 7:90. An afternoon high school band contest precedes a massed band of about 300 players directed by Stanley Wesley of Coe College. Local clubs plan to accompany the group to advertise the Centennial.
Washington Centennial boosters drew about 159 people to Iowa City on short notice. The group used the Little German band from Brighton for music and led a parade with a police escort. A Swedish dialect readings program entertained the crowd while in Keota a smaller contingent joined local festivities.
A five story Northwestern Malt and Grain company plant in Chicago was nearly destroyed by a blaze that drew more than 500 firefighters. The fire threatened nearby elevators while 860,000 bushels of grain were at risk before the flames were checked.
The Little Creek Wellman and Kinross Catholic churches sponsor the annual picnic three miles north of Kinross Iowa on Sunday August 6 A 3 pm program precedes a 4 pm chicken dinner Evening amusements include a platform dance with Jimmie Smith and his WMT Orchestra The organizers secured a large platform for a cool comfortable night of dancing all in Kinross area.
Court officials announced this morning that the courthouse will close. The notice stated a shutdown for unspecified reasons, with no immediate date given and no further details available.
Report from Centennial headquarters shows $700 in advance tickets sold for the Washington pageant to be staged at Case Field over three nights next Tuesday to Thursday. Officials foresee large crowds and plan parking at four old grade schools with bus shuttles.
The Sunbonnet club reports 600 members including women and girls and expects growth by week’s end. Badges remain for sale at square stands and Centennial headquarters with committee members offering badges to prospective entrants. The contest closes tomorrow night at 9 30 with entries due by 7 45 next Wednesday.
Tuesday at ten in the morning the Centennial parade proceeds and the Court House offices close for the rest of the day.
Washington residents are urged to open lawns for parking and picnics during the centennial. Courtesy cards reading WELCOME PARK HERE are available at Centennial headquarters and the Journal office at no charge. Organizers seek hospitality to enhance out of town visitors' experience.
The Miami Fillmore program features soloists Mrs Laura Oldfield and Miss June Garrett with pieces including Fillmore Overture, Light Cavalry, von Suppe March, and North Iowa Band Festival selections. Rosalie the Prairie Flower, Amparito Roco Old Time Song, God Bless America and World Is Waiting for the Sunrise appear, with arrangements by Alford and others.
The antique exhibit committee requests all antique articles for the log cabin exhibit be brought in by Saturday, not later than Monday, to enhance the community event. Items sought include old firearms, Indian relics, glass, china, furniture, textiles, cooking utensils, books, prints, doll furniture, jewelry, and needlework. A spinning wheel demonstration is planned.
Gerald Duncan attends the World Poultry Congress in Cleveland Ohio where he wins first award for brown Chinese geese and best display in waterfowl. Harry Atkins of Davenport is re elected president of the American Poultry Association and takes first prize for a partridge colored bird. Lyle Fuller of Jesup earns a superior rating in the classification content.
Ed Muck, treasurer of the illuminated fountain fund, reports 1609 in the bank from all contributions and souvenir sales. Despite added costs for equipment and a walk around the fountain, the drive continues with urgent appeals for gifts to avoid debt, led by Mrs. Rose Reid and listing multiple donors and amounts.
A Senate appropriations subcommittee restored a 119 million dollar farm fund to the third deficiency bill and sent it to the full committee with a request to speed adjournment. The House previously rejected the fund but is expected to yield. A major dispute over WPA wage and layoff policy could delay adjournment beyond Saturday. Senate Democratic Leader Barkley doubted completion tonight.
The pulling contest will start at 11 am Wednesday at the north end of the Lincoln school site. Committeemen P F Whisler Frank Parrish L C Willits and Ralph Waggoner announced it as part of Centennial celebrations. Two classes compete with prizes of 15 10 and 5 dollars. weigh ins at Washington Lumber yards precede the event supervised by three judges using a dynamometer from Iowa State College. Entry is $2 per team due by 10 am at the Centennial office.
Dr. Arthur Atack of the Methodist church will preach the sermon at the union service in Central Park next Sunday evening with the Washington Concert Band providing a half hour program from 7 to 7 30. The service will feature gospel singing, prayer by Stev Vernon Carter, accordion medleys by John Yousling, scripture reading by Rev Carl W K and a solo of The Old Rugged Cross.
Mrs. Sharp of Newton spent today visiting her friend Etha Dawson and shared time together in town.
